Six healthcare workers suffered allergic reactions after getting a shot of Moderna coronavirus vaccine in San Diego, California. Their symptoms were considered severe and required medical attention.
The doses administered to the six healthcare workers were part of the Moderna Lot 041L20A distributed to 287 providers across the state earlier this month. That batch of shipment, which arrived in California between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, is composed of 330,000 shots.
Moderna said in a statement that it is cooperating with California’s health department to investigate the allergic reactions.
“Moderna acknowledges receiving a report from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that a number of individuals at one vaccination center were treated for possible allergic reactions after vaccination from one lot of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine,” the statement read. “The company is fully cooperating with CDPH in investigating these reported adverse events.”
Dr. Erica Pan, California’s state epidemiologist, said Sunday, Jan. 17, that providers should err on the side of caution and stop using the doses until federal, state and company officials finish an investigation.
“Out of an extreme abundance of caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we are recommending that providers use other available vaccine inventory and pause the administration of vaccines from Moderna Lot 041L20A until the investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Moderna and the state is complete,” she said.
Monterey, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz have already paused distribution while two Covid-19 vaccine clinics have been canceled in Stanislaus County following the allergic reaction reports.
The delay was a huge blow to California’s vaccine distribution efforts. California currently has the second highest number of coronavirus cases per capita in the United States, with Los Angeles being a particular hotspot.
All cases of apparent allergic reactions occurred at San Diego County’s drive-through mass vaccination site at Petco Park. “I don’t know if that came into play. Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t but anybody that has a lot of allergic reactions, just maybe think about it and talk to their doctors,” she said.
All sites giving coronavirus vaccines have specific guidelines to follow, including monitoring of patients after the shot is administered for at least 15 minutes – or longer in cases where patients have a medical condition that could lead to an allergic reaction.

Baseball legend Hank Aaron, who received the Moderna COVID vaccine on Jan. 5, has died. According to the New York Times, the Atlanta Braves confirmed the 86-year-old Hall of Famer’s death today, but did not provide further details.
CNN reported that Aaron died “peacefully in his sleep,” and that no cause of death was disclosed.
Aaron made headlines earlier this month when he was photographed getting the Moderna vaccine. He told the Associated Press at the time that getting vaccinated “makes me feel wonderful.” He added:

Telugu, India: 3 Vaccination Deaths In 4 Days
A series of deaths in frontline workers’ communities who took vaccinations has been raising tensions in the Telugu states.
Within four days, Telangana and Andhra together registered four deaths which now turned into main concern in the medical communities in the states.
While a 42-year-old health worker in Nirmal who took the shot died within hours after getting vaccinated, the suspicious death toll reached to four on Sunday.
A woman in Andhra Pradesh and another in Telangana died on Sunday, days after both of them had taken the Covid-19 vaccination a few days ago.
The ASHA worker, identified as Vijaya Lakshmi (42), was admitted to the Guntur Government Hospital (GGH) on January 21 after she had fainted.
The next day doctors declared her dead and sent her body for autopsy to find the reason behind her death while the family members alleged that she died after the coronavirus vaccine was administered to her.
In another similar case, a 45-year-old female health care worker who was vaccinated on January 19 in Telangana’s Warangal Urban District died on Sunday.
The deceased reportedly complained of severe chest pain and slept in her house at Shayampeta on the outskirts of Warangal.
Meanwhile, the death of health workers who are administered vaccine set new tensions in the workers who are yet to get inoculated. Severe headache and chest pain have common symptoms in the people who succumbed so far.

Merck Scraps COVID Vaccines — Says It’s More Effective To Get The Virus And Recover

Vaccine manufacturer Merck has abandoned development of two coronavirus vaccines, saying that after extensive research it was concluded that the shots offered less protection than just contracting the virus itself and developing antibodies.
The company announced that the shots V590 and V591 were ‘well tolerated’ by test patients, however they generated an ‘inferior’ immune system response in comparison with natural infection.
The company stated that instead it will focus on research into therapeutic drugs labeled as MK-7110 and MK-4482.
The drugs aim to protect patients from the damage of an overactive immune response to the virus.
“Interim results from a Phase 3 study showed a greater than 50 percent reduction in the risk of death or respiratory failure in patients hospitalized with moderate to severe COVID-19,” the company’s statement noted of the MK-7110 drug.
Merck is to receive around $356 million from the US government to fast-track production of the potential treatments under Operation Warp Speed.

A series of deaths in frontline workers’ communities who took vaccinations has been raising tensions in the Telugu states.
Within four days, Telangana and Andhra together registered four deaths which now turned into main concern in the medical communities in the states.
While a 42-year-old health worker in Nirmal who took the shot died within hours after getting vaccinated, the suspicious death toll reached to four on Sunday.
A woman in Andhra Pradesh and another in Telangana died on Sunday, days after both of them had taken the Covid-19 vaccination a few days ago.
The ASHA worker, identified as Vijaya Lakshmi (42), was admitted to the Guntur Government Hospital (GGH) on January 21 after she had fainted.
The next day doctors declared her dead and sent her body for autopsy to find the reason behind her death while the family members alleged that she died after the coronavirus vaccine was administered to her.
In another similar case, a 45-year-old female health care worker who was vaccinated on January 19 in Telangana’s Warangal Urban District died on Sunday.
The deceased reportedly complained of severe chest pain and slept in her house at Shayampeta on the outskirts of Warangal.
Meanwhile, the death of health workers who are administered vaccine set new tensions in the workers who are yet to get inoculated. Severe headache and chest pain have common symptoms in the people who succumbed so far.
However, the government and doctors are making it clear that vaccination has nothing to do with their deaths. What’s happening in Telugu States?

Vaccine manufacturer Merck has abandoned development of two coronavirus vaccines, saying that after extensive research it was concluded that the shots offered less protection than just contracting the virus itself and developing antibodies.
The company announced that the shots V590 and V591 were ‘well tolerated’ by test patients, however they generated an ‘inferior’ immune system response in comparison with natural infection.
The company stated that instead it will focus on research into therapeutic drugs labeled as MK-7110 and MK-4482.
The drugs aim to protect patients from the damage of an overactive immune response to the virus.
“Interim results from a Phase 3 study showed a greater than 50 percent reduction in the risk of death or respiratory failure in patients hospitalized with moderate to severe COVID-19,” the company’s statement noted of the MK-7110 drug.
Merck is to receive around $356 million from the US government to fast-track production of the potential treatments under Operation Warp Speed.
