We can hear what he's saying, he'd force Ukraine to sue for peace and lose territory. That's what Russia wants right now, because they cannot achieve total victory. But, they'll wait until Trump-Vance sells Ukraine out and allow it to roll over them. It will be sad. It will be horrific. Actually, there is good reason to believe it was because Trump was no longer in power.
You can't forget how much the exposure of Russia's influence on Trump crimped any plans Putin may have had.
A second Trump term would have lessened that, but him losing meant that Putin could no longer rely on Trump eventually handing him Ukraine.
With that avenue closed, a move to a more military approach makes more sense.
