Whats going on with the prices of Rolex Watches

I like my luxury watches because it is a lovely piece of esoteric craftmanship and engineering that brings a smile to my face any time I check the time. It’s not for everyone and those who don’t share my enthusiasm for beautiful timepieces are welcome to ignore and keep,walking. I don’t expect them to get it nor do I bother wasting my time trying to convert them.

Get that Rolex, life is short.

I consider spending a lot of money on a watch similar to buying jewelry, like buying a bracelet. You're not buying it for the functionality, your buying it as a gift to yourself. You have disposable income to spend on a luxury. Maybe it even has some investment value. But this is what affluent people do.

Not all affluent people but there is a lot of insecure people who purchase bling for themselves because they need to convey that message of success to overcome their social insecurities. Personally I think gold chains while garish is easier way to project 'fuck I'm rolling in money'.

I agree there are affluent people who don't think twice about the Rolex - it's a logical accessory. My $15 copy wouldn't bother these people, their confidence doesn't rely on a watch.

As for the relevance of my post on the topic of Rolex watches, I'm suggesting that if price is an issue, maybe you should take a step back and reflect why you need to purchase this watch.

Rolex is the cheapest watch you can own. I bought my Submariner for ~$8k out the door in 2014, today I can flip it for $12k. During peak pandemic it was 16k. You have to wait though...a lesson learned the hard way. Bought a minty kermit Mk1 dial with fat 4 for 7k and I sold it at a loss @5.5k a month later. should have kept the kermit because that watch is worth probably north of 30k.

So I will be purchasing a Rolex Submariner Stainless Steal with Date, 41mm, at the local Rolex Dealer it's $12300. But know one has any, I can buy one brand new Box , Papers, tags, $17500 .
My question is WHY, this will be my 3rd Rolex and turning 60 in July, do I wait? or pay?

Buy whatever your fragile ego requires. I never look at anybody's watches and I haven't worn a watch myself in years. I do notice that the only people who look at other people's watches are those who also own an expensive watch. It is like a fraternity of sorts.

I admit I did buy a Rolex when I lived in New York. A guy in the office was continuously flaunting his his Rolex so that motivated me to buy one also. I came in and made exaggerated gestures to show off the watch including pointing at it and whispering 'Rolex'. I don't think the gesturing pissed him off as much as me admitting that I bought mine from a street vendor for $15.

The reason you buy a Rolex is for the investment, I bought my first one almost 30 years ago and pain about $8000, today it's worth over $30000 dollars, and I wore it almost every day, I can go on...

Let's see what investing $8,000 over 30 years brings ... according to this investment calculator ~ $61,000. Even if I lower the investment rate to 5% , I'm still over $ 34,000. Of course it's not as flashy as gold chains or other jewelry but then there is no chance of theft, damage or securing a buyer. I can go on ....

I have a Rolex and a Tudor, both gifts. I use to wear them 2-3 times a year. These days I wear my Rolex/Tudor look alikes. For about $100 or less I can get excellent watches that are better quality than Seiko with a Seiko movement inside.

These days in London it has become common for thugs to rob people of their expensive watches. I would gladly give up a sub $100 watch to not to get beaten by a gang of thugs.

In a world where even Rolex dealers can not tell if it is the genuine article, how do you justify paying the Rolex price. If an expert can not tell if it is real with a jewelers loupe, how is the ordinary person going to tell looking at a wrist from across the room?

Bought my TAG Heuer F1 automatic at Yorkdale for $ 1200.00 over a decade ago. At the time they were the official watch of the F1 circuit, Rolex has now outbid them. I only wear it for special occasions, I also have a Bulova Rat Pack and a Hugo Boss - they are all collecting dust.

These days I'd rather spend my money on very small rocks that float in water.

Watches are like cars. Sure, you can drive a Benz, Audi, Porsche or a Maserati if you can afford it (or not), and show off some level of achievement, or just enjoy nice things. The argument can be made that a 25 Y/O Hyundai or ford F-150 from 1997 will also work to get someone from A to B, why bother driving an expensive car?
I love watches and watch design, there's something beautiful about a timepiece that is so well engineered and designed. I get it, a Seiko does the same thing, but like women's jewellery, it's really about the person wearing it and how it makes them feel.
I love wearing my watches, I have my fathers' Rolex as well as a few others that I bought as milestones pieces for myself. I have no intention of selling them and think of them more as "heirloom" jewellery that my kids or Grand kids may have (or sell) one day. No need for anyone to be rude here, to each their own.

They want you to believe that high end watches are in short supply so they can charge high prices, the truth is that there is an over supply.
