What is your favorite US city to visit for a weekend in the summer?

I went to Boston and Chicago last summer. Do you have a favorite city for a weekend in the US? I may do NYC again. Note: It's a trip with the inlaws who have to travel to YYZ from the Sault. SO I prefer to find a spot we can make on same day of travel.

NYC or San Francisco. San Francisco is a bit of a long trip, but I've gone on a late afternoon Friday flight and taken a red-eye back a few times which gave me close to two full days to enjoy the city and surroundings.

Both cities are pricy though.

If you are a baseball fan plan something around a Jays Road Trip. A coouple of sunny afternoon games are always a great way to see the city and get tips from nearby fans for dining and other stuff to do.

So close and yet so far.
Hershey PA is a delicious trip, and not too far. I've been there a few times, and may go again this summer. Hershey museum, factory tour, Hershey Park, Amish/Mennonite country, Gettysburg, Lancaster, York. You go through (or not too far from) Corning on the way down, and the Little League Museum if either are of interest.

I'd vote San Francisco as well, but for same-day travel it would be tough to beat Chicago. Cheap direct flights available as well.

Have fun - KK

Washington, D.C. Smithsonian, old towne Alexandria, baseball, historic Georgetown, the mall, Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, great dining, Arlington. Air Canada flies into Reagan national airport.

It really depends on what you enjoy doing. Since you are saying "city" I will assume you want more of a city experience and not a small town one, otherwise Cape Cod, Gloucester, Salem, etc. are all great weekend trips and easy to get to.
For a city I actually love spending a weekend in Washington DC, the restaurants are fantastic and not surprisingly it has amazing museums, art galleries and a ton of things to do for people of all ages. I prefer to stay in Dupont Circle, nice shops, easy to walk around and you are still nice and close to the museums and galleries.
Another city I was somewhat surprised by how much I enjoy it is Philadelphia, also a city with some great restaurants and for me art galleries are a way I can spend the bulk of my days and Philly definitely has that. It's worth a visit if you haven't been and compared to NYC, Chicago, Boston or DC you'll find Philly to be quite reasonably priced.

I used to enjoy going to the States but ever since 911 and the introduction of The Patriot Act and the destruction of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and America's rapid advancement to a Police State. I refuse to go.

Sadly, have to agree about the American Police State. On at least three occassions, I`ve been given `the works` at the border, (Cornwall/Massena NY), having done absolutely NOTHING! The Patriot Act,/Homeland Security BS, gives, I think, these individual customs officers waaaay too much power! (Last year, I crossed at the Odgensburg bridge, nervous as hell, expecting the worst, but behold, no problems! Got a guy who must`ve been in a good mood that day. Go figure...)

Anyway, when I do go, I personally enjoy smaller, picturesque places in New England, and in particular, Burlington Vermont. Not very big, but very clean, very vibrant downtown with many little cafes/bistros, shops, museums, etc. And taking a drive through the little `Norman Rockwell, small town America` towns throughout the mountains, a lot fun.
