Yeah the coils are the only thing that's stopping me from picking up a 1.8T or VR6 Jetta (I don't like the feeble 2.0 engine).

But in all fairness, I think the 2003 models have been retrofitted with the new coils and should have no problem. My problem is I can only afford a used one.

Wires for a VW, I would say Bosch (which is original equipment) or BERU who also makes a lot of OE products for a lot of German cars.

i've had my coil replaced too. my guy says it's a common problem with the vr6. it's the housing i think that's the problem, made from plastic or something. all and all i'd have to say my vr6 is the best car i've owned.

as for the 2.0 litre engines, there isn't too much you can do to pump them up. maybe you should put a neuspeed p-flow, k&n filter in and see what that does. otherwise i think you need to do some serious work (replace the cams and stuff like that).

Hey t_dot, what model year is your VR6?
And did you replace the coils ahead of time.
I'm looking at taking a long trip with any VR6 I pick up, but get a bit concerned after hearing of these coil packs leaving people stranded.

I prefer more traditional vehicles (V8, read wheel drive, in garage in winter, etc). But I have to know - what is a coil pack, and how does it leave you stranded? It is the ignition coil?

my baby is a 98. no real big problems in the 3 years i've had it, but i did do a lot of searching for just the right one before i bought. if you're buying used my advice is to buy a certified pre owned from a vw dealer. personally think the best place to go is pfaff in newmarket. otherwise get a good relationship going with a good vw shop and have them look it over thoroughly before you buy.

the coil problem didn't strand me really. it started when i noticed a rough idle and a little hesitation when it was damp, or humid out. then one day the check engine light came on and there was quite bad idle, and mucho power loss. the funny thing was when i took it in the guy told me i was running on 5 cyls. for a while, but i didn't notice it.

i'd recomend the vr6 to anyone that likes smooth torquey power as opposed to the 'rev the hell out of it 'til it kicks in' power of the japanese rockets. the only thing she's a thirsty little girl.

R32

It will be here this year. I just bought the 2003 GTI 1.8T 2 dayz ago and that was one of my first questions I asked the salesman.

At first they were not going to bring it here due to the low riding position (It dosent adhere to Canadian standards because it sits too low to the ground)

The dealer told me it would be in the area of $37-$40 g's though, WOW....

My 1.8 T was 28,000. fully loaded with leather, esp, 17" wheels etc.etc

I'm happy wit it...

It's great to know I'm not alone...

I have a 02 Jetta VR6 with about 65K on it. Cold starting became really rough but got better once it wamed up. Severe loss of power and check engine light blazing until then (just like tdot said). $400 later I have been introduced to the finer points of the coil issue.

BTW, anybody else have a ridiculous time trying to close their trunk? The effort required is way out of whack for mine.

Other than that though, one sweet ride....

WTF ?!?!?!?! $37-$40 g's for a Golf ?!?!?!?!No fucking way ... I think you made a smart choice with your 1.8 T moneyshotz ...

BTW, don't you guys think how the original "economical" cars such as the Mini and Beetle are now so expensive compared to their predecessors? I mean come on ... the Beetle was meant for the "common volk" and the Mini was for the average English dude ... now, it seems, these cars are treated as prized gems because of thier nostalgic value ...

Anyway ... I am getting off topic, lets get back to Volks Wagens ... (I apologize for going off topic but could not hold my tongue when I read that a Golf [even though special edition] costs $40 g's ...
