Richard Branson appears to have released details of an embargoed UN report - in case they change their minds...

The UN may be about to call on the governments of all countries to end the "war on drugs" and decriminalise the use and possession of all illegal substances.

In an extraordinary post on his Virgin website, Richard Branson said he had been showed a report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) which dramatically changed the organisation's stance on drug control.

He said the "as-yet unreleased statement" had been sent to some of the world's media under embargo - but that he has gone public with it early for fear the UN will "bow to pressure by not going ahead with this important move".

This on the heels of Amnesty International supporting the decriminalization of prostitution. Is our society in danger of actually progressing on these issues??? lol

countries like Singapore, China, etc have death penalty for drug traffickers and have strong anti-drug laws. they are not going to decriminalize drugs

Legalization does not mean a free for all where nayone cam import and sell drugs wholesale or deal on the street or night clubs. It means that the packaging, sale and distribution will be handles by the government with appropriate taxes added. This cuts out the drug importers and dealers. All profits made previously in the illegal drug trade will be tax that the government can use to curb illegal drug trafficking and addiction problems.

but that's because alcohol is the substance that should have been demonized and made illegal from the start, not cannabis or mescaline. Alcohol causes more problems because it's more toxic, its intoxication more dangerous, and overall it's more addictive than, say, LSD.

The reality is that different substances can be associated with certain kinds of people, different lifestyles, and different levels of risk. The very nature of alcohol itself and the social environments within which it is championed and celebrated are what make it so dangerous. You can't just substitute alcohol with any other substance and consider it a fair comparison.

I don't think the USA will go for this. They're only source of income these day's is the Afghan Heroin Industry they control. If drugs are legalized the UN will kill the Golden Goose the CIA relies on to run all of it's Black Op's around the World. If this happens someone is going to be taken for a ride in a convertible in Texas !

I'm not a drug user, but I'm curious to know what the motivation is here.
