What is more important to you at a tropical resort?

Some examples below:

Beach chairs with shade that you don't have to reserve by getting up at 6:00 am in the morning.
Good food. Hot coffee, heated plates. Nice cold beer.
White sand. Large beach. Tropical trees. Nice pools. Nice room. Hot showers. Bed sheet change every day. TV with lots of channels. Good WI-FI. Gym. Massage.
Hiking nearby or other nature excursions. City to explore nearby.
Good music/dancing/theatre. Quiet.

Are you referring to all inclusive resorts or places in say South beach, Hawaii and other warm US states that aren't necessarily "resorts" but just beachfront hotels?

Good question. I was thinking more on the lines of the Caribbean all inclusive resorts.

OK. Never been to an all inclusive resort but to Hawaii a few times.
So from my point of view I would say over cleanliness of hotel, close to restaurants, a little off main drag so it's quieter. Not worried about pools as I prefer to swim in ocean.
The hotel I stay at in Hawaii has never disappointed me.

Beach, beach and the beach!

I must have been 20 times.

Beach beaches to swim and play in water all day with young kids: Santa Maria, Cuba

Beach beaches to play in waves and surf with older kids: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Best remote beaches: East coast of Barbados or West coast of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe

I don’t go to all inclusive resorts anymore, I went to many of them when my kids were young.
In my opinion, Beaches resorts were the best.
They all have great beaches, beautiful properties, great food, and great service.
When I travel, now I usually go to smaller boutique hotels, as they offer more of a unique experience.

For me it depends on my purpose. But there are some standard amenities no matter what:
Standards:
- Wifi connection somewhere
- Wide beach without foot-stabbing rocks to go into the water
- Palapas and/or palm trees for shady naps
- French fries… I cannot stress this one enough, the rest of the food could be shit, but I can survive with a couple heaping plates of fries for the week
- Short transfer to the hotel (<30min) I’m not there to ride a bus 90min to and from the ✈
- 24hr snack bar… made to order rather than buffet 👍
- No kids club or babysitting… too old for all the screaming
- onsite disco/nightclub… or one that has a nightly transfer to one… means there should be plenty of young ladies in very small bikinis about
- In addition to the disco tip, it’s great if they have excursions (waterfalls, horseback rides, ATVs…). I’ve been invited to join college “kids” on some… great way to naturally meet some of the girls. Just be charming and not creepy!
