Torrents For Dummies - A reference for the rest of us :)

STEP 1

If you dont have broadband internet then I highly recommend you get it.
If money isnt an issue then I also recommend Sympatico Ultra
It's also best to have Windows XP. You can get away with using Win98 but I dont recommend it.

STEP 2

You need to download Bitcomet which you can do here:

http://www.download.com/3002-2196_4-10322719.html?tag=dir

Install it and restart your PC

STEP 3

Go to these websites and download codecs. You will need these if you want to play movies on your PC
You need both Audio and Video codecs

http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

These are all free
Install these and restart your PC

STEP 4

You also need to download the 4 major media players which are VLC media player, Quicktime, Windows Media Player and RealPlayer.
These are all free and you can Google them.
You're PC is now ready to download and play torrents
You need to register with torrent sites which is also free and you can then begin downloading movies, games, applications etc.

STEP 5

Here's is a list of torrent sites:

You can also get torrents for Dvdsanta and Winavi which will allow you to burn movies onto DVD's

Not really. You listed some steps but didn't explain how one connects to the other.

I already asked that. You should read the threads before posting. It saves bandwidth.

good stuff

thanks for all your advice on torrents esco, i got on 3 weeks ago to torrents, and have a few new full cd's in my collection. :D

even with the rogers cap, you'd have to download over 200 complete discs to go over it in one month.

just one question, how vulnerable are we to the record industry on torrents? can we get nailed as easy on torrents, as on peer-to-peer networks like kazaa? anyway to protect ourselves?

FYI downloading a 1 gig file not just 1 gig of bandwidth.... it is all dependent on speed. A 1 gig file on Sympatico uses 2.5 gigs of bandwidth at a constant 200 k/s

A torrent is a type of file-sharing program that allows you to downloadf movies, music, applications...etc

I get about 80 to 90 on torrents (sometimes 150 or more) and on limewire I get albout 200. That means that torrents are about 1/2 speed but its still worth it because the choice and quality is much better.
I can get a movie in about 2.5 hours and still surf while waiting

It depends on the number of seeds and peers you have on a torrent doesn't it? I routinely get speeds of 150+kbs on torrents and a couple of times i've been in the 400s topping out in the low 500s. Oh yeah if you're wondering that was on Rogers extream.

torrent for dummies leaves alot out.

what do you do with the files you download.

most of the files are in rar format.

once you extract, what to do with the bin and cue files ?

can I play these on a dvd player ? how to convert the files to dvd format.

escohot just should have cut and pasted from the forums of the torrent sites it would be a lot simpler.

no offense to escohort but just because escohort downloads torrents does make hime an expert on torrents.

If you're behind a firewall, you might want to look into port forwarding to increase your speeds
you should be specific, port forwarding only applies to hardware firewalls and not software firewalls, for the most part.
