The thief's actions are separate from the claim that the drivers were negligent.

It is an offence to leave your car idling unattended. It is even an offence to leave your keys in the car, locked or not.
If so in Ontario, that is still a matter for a civil tort suit from those injured by the plow truck driven by the thief, and of course there is the whole issue of comparative negligence/non-absolute contributory negligence liablity as a defence by the plow company and their employees, since certainly the majority of the liablity remains with the thief.

I'd like to see what part of the criminal code covers this.
I think it is in the highway traffic act and not the criminal code. Years ago (20+), a cop threated me with this when I got out to use an ATM. I saw the cop walking down the street (the only person in sight at around 4 AM in the morning) but I did not know about the law and didn't think he would steal the car, so I got out anyway to use the ATM. He said if they had not been on a work-to-rule thing at the time, he would have given me a ticket.

Learn something new every day. Living downtown leaving the keys in the car isn't something that even entered my mind.

Does anyone get the suspicion that tommorows giant funeral is propaganda? The classic woe is us, one of the brotherhood has died in the line of duty, please fund us more so this doesn't happen.... I'm not being insenstive, I'm being realistic. How on earth is he a hero of this proportion?

At a time where money is tight, where did they find this extra dough?

I do wish peace to his family ...but 8000 people and shutting down part of university avenue, and 1/2mast flags... WTF.
Just anther another example how big a jerk you can be.

Take a look at the crowd along the roadside filled with the general public who, according the to other members, don't trust//like/respect the police, especially on this very nasty day weather wise. They'll give you the answer to your stupid question. They won't be sending a propaganda message on bit.

Not in the least, furthest thing from my mind.

I'm not sure if your insensitive, but I'll give you that for now, but as far as you being realistic, I think you're dillusional. btw, when a fireman or police fall in the line of duty anywhere in North America, this is quite common for the city to invite the public to pay their respects to the deceased, after all they are serving the public. It's also quite common for uniformed officers from many cities to attend as well as a sign of support. This particular death obviously hit a nerve with a significant portion of the public as evidenced with the long lineup of people who waited in this extreme cold the last couple of days to view his casket. Thus the plans for a large funeral to accomodate a large attendance from the public. Just because you don't care as much doesn't mean others share you're feelings, in fact a very large number don't share your view.

there is nothing wrong with questioning the cost or the extent of the ceremony to honour this policeman. the poster is doing so on an escort review board- not in the chapel during the funeral.

As many say, funerals are there for those who are grieving. If thousands of citizens want to grieve this death of a public servant serving the public who died in the service of the public, then the long standing tradition of the public service agency/government paying kicks in.

Should we ship someone who died in war back by UPS? Should we throw this guy in a pine box and tell people to stay away?

The poster has NO IDEA of the cost of the funeral. No idea whether the Convention Center is provided free, if someone is donating the chairs... nothing. He is NOT questioning, he is making a statement that he resents the ceremony surrounding the death of a police officer.

And is a tool for doing so.
I disagree he is a tool for questioning the actions of the government. its his right. there is a trend in society to not question the actions of the police or soldiers or any governmental policy in relation to same- those who question are deemed anti-patriotic or worse- i believe this to be a dangerous anti-democratic trend.

the right of the populace to ask and be answered should not be constrained. whether you agree or disagree with the costs of the funeral or not- one should not limit the right of a citizen to question the actions or policies of a government.
