The Greatest Country on Earth is...

Why does the United States think they are the greatest country on earth? What do they do that declares themselves great?

I think one of the biggest reasons Americans think the US is the greatest country on Earth is because they are easily the least well-travelled people in the industrialised world.

According to this article in Forbes, 40% of Americans surveyed have never left the US. Additionally, 11% have never even travelled outside of their state!

Most Canadians I know have visited at least four or five countries; personally, I've visited 10.

On a visit to London when I was 22, an American couple approached me in the street to ask me if I knew where Americans liked to hang out in the city -- I don't think such a place exists, but evidently, they had no interest in meeting or interacting with locals, only their own kind.

I've seen this sort of behaviour numerous times from Americans when travelling abroad. Personally, Canadians are the last people I am interested in meeting or hanging out with when I am in another country.

A friend of mine spent a year in Geneva studying in a programme that was nearly entirely made up of Americans, Canadians, British and Australians. The Canadians, Aussies and Brits all hung out together, whereas the Americans would only hang out with other Americans.

Additionally, American media and the American school system is virtually entirely USA-centric. I even remember some online US magazine publishing a "10 cities in the world everyone must visit" list about 10 years ago, and 7 of the 10 cities mentioned were in the US, with Paris, Rome and Tokyo thrown in to make look like there were actually cities worthwhile worth visiting outside of America. Needless to say, it was the subject of many online slings and arrows.

Here in Canada, we also grew up with a variety of Canadian, British, French-Canadian and American programming on TV, and our news and educational systems are not 98% focused on what only happens in Canada.

So, when you never leave your country and your media and educational system gives you little to no view of the outside world, and you're made to believe that only your country is relevant, you're bound to believe it.

I went to Switzerland when I was 14....before the first world war. I jest. It was everything I imagined and more. Most beautiful country I saw. Don't suppose I will travel much more. In Canada you drive through the Rockies at the bottom. There you can drive up the mountains and look down on villages from up on high. Pristine. Beautiful. Clean. I hope I can get back there one day. Canada is great. But there is competition.

Rick Steves encourages Americans to travel more, outside the USA, travel in the USA doesn't count. Culture enriches one's soul and gives a better understanding of the world.

You can't deny that something in your home or apartment is made in China.
While that is true, most when given a choice wouldn't buy China. It's almost always shit quality.
For someone who has become accustom to the notion of Western Freedom or American Values China screams evil. No freedom of speech, press or assembly.
On the other hand there is opportunity in China that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.

Personally, I wouldn't go near that place.

Major Cities in China is developing in a rapid rate. The opportunity is definitely high there. You just need to speak their lango.

Since Allibaba came on the scene chinese quality has improved drastically. You can only bring so many jobs back to the usa because there aren't enough people to fill them.

it's their education system. From morning ritual of pledging allegiance to the flag to narrow focus on just the US in history, geography, etc - they come out believing that they are the crowning jewel in the evolution of mankind. When I was a late teen travelling the US - I knew probably as much about their country as they did and much, much more about the rest of the world. Things might be changing because slowly they are starting to realize that democracy, freedom of religion may not be as absolute for all as they learned in school.

Jim Jefferies had a good point in a routine I will leave a link for for those that are curious. 'In Holland i can smoke a joint while fucking a prostitute in front of a cop - why isn't Holland called the land of freedom ?' Link:

I have friends in the US and I hope they can reach the level they were taught but there are a minority of the population refuse to give up political power of the 1950's without a fight.

All the medical equipment (COVID tests, etc) made in China will save your life one day. You can't walk away from that. Watch this video, masks are not mandatory in China right now because China has COVID under control, life is almost back to normal.

From a geographical perspective the USA has a lot to offer - Mountains, snow and skiing; desserts and hot humid climates; beautiful cottage country and forests/lakes; big cities and unique culture with multi-cultural options; wonders of the world and amazing architecture. As much as I love Canada, the USA offers more climate/geographical diversity.

The military is equal to the next 8th biggest military forces combined in the world, putting Russia and China to shame that is China and Russia togther are not even a fraction of the USA military power. It took the USA two days to destroy one of the largest militarizes at the time . . .
As an American offiical woudl say .. . normally you be right, but we have nukes.

Very true. These "best lists" are highly subjective and, frankly, worthless. I've been to almost every European country, few South American, a couple of Asians and many parts of North America. You simply can't compare a country as diverse as the United States to a single European country.

Personally I think wherever people live they feel it's the greatest country in the world.it's only natural to feel that way.
Lots of people move to Canada and still long for their home country. I've talked to lots of immigrants who would rather still be in their home country but come here because of war or poor living conditions.
