Should you pay parking tickets on a rental?

We had friends visiting and they parked their rental car in the street overnight. In the morning there was a ticket on their windshield. Since it is a rental car, should they pay it? Would the ticket actually be traced back to them?

Car Rental

It my understanding when you rent a car you ACCEPT full responsability for tickets and damage. My daughterr visited over the holidays and rented a car. Some asshole through a rock through the rear window. She had to pay up front but got reimbursed bu the Ins Co. The Cops caought the guy strung out on coke.

Up to the rental company. They certainly can trace it back...and I know they will for 407 fees, etc.

pay it

best to just pay it. if they leave it up to the rental company they will find you and they will charge you the cost of the ticket and also other administration fees. Take a look at your rental agreement in the very fine print, it usually covers stuff like this.

your rental lease agreement will let you know how much of a surcharge over the cost of the ticket the rental company will charge you if you are ticketed.

Just pay the damn thing. I know parking tickets are a cash grab for the city and it hurts to cough up the dough but it is far cheaper to pay the ticket now than to wait for it to double in price and then have the rental company tack on their surcharges (and they will).

As for them charging you, they WILL. They'd be idiots not to. Put it this way: they charged you what, $80.00 per day for the vehicle? So if the ticket sits around long enough and they get the bill it will probably be $40.00 by the time they get around to paying it. That's half the cost of the daily rental. I don't know ANY company that would throw away 50% of their retail price.

BTW: your friends will probably notice the charge on the CC they used to secure the rental. They might contact your friends to notify them of the charges but don't count on it.

No way could the rental company trace it unless your friends had to give their name and license# to get the rental in the first place.

I'm not sure if they could track them down just based on that...they might need a credit card number too.:D

You'll pay. I've had a few parking tickets from rentals and decided not to pay them. Well, a month later, you'll get a bill from the rental company with the cost of the ticket + their service charges.

When you rent a car, you need a credit card. It will be charged to that credit card. If they did not do that every asshole in the city would drive on the 407, park in fire routes, hanicap spots. They will get you back for the charges. 1000%. Trust me on this one. Just pay it.

They parked the car in a no parking zone, therefore they are the guilty ones. Why does everyone want to stiff someone else and not take responsibility for their actions?

Pay the ticket, it is the right thing to do.

Somewhere but not here.
Most rentals ask for your ID - usually something with your address and/or drivers licence so they know where to find you. In the rental agreement they make you sign you will pay for any tolls or tickets and they have your Credit Card number. You already approved them adding these charges to the card when you signed the rental agreement.

Pay it now OR they will pay it later and your will pay them at least double.

They probably got hit with one of those "unreasonable length of time" tickets. That is where you park overnight and even though you're allowed to park there, if you park longer than 3 hrs they ticket you.

Your friends broke the law, for which there is a penalty. Your friends agreed with the rental company that they, not the company, would pay all tickets and then they went ahead and parked illegally. That costs the rental compny—it's in print on the agreement, some agreements even have you specially sign that clause, and every time I've rented they've told me orally and asked if I understood—and they have a lot of incentive to collect.

Do please explain again the lowlife thought processes by which they think they shouldn't pay. Especially the defective reasoning by which they imagine they'll get away with it.

I found it interesting that you were the first one in the thread (it took 14 posts!)to approach the issue from that angle with such brutal honesty.

Well Done!

Any time I've rented they want your drivers license so they know your legal to drive, age above 21 and a credit card for just this reason.

Your responsible for the tickets and toll charges. If you don't pay they will charge them and an administration fee to your credit card.

Car Rental-tickets Etc

Of course they are going to know who has what car at what time frame. If you rent a car from say Fri-Mon they know its you. They already have all your pers. info including cc. Any charges parking tickets 407 that come in after the car is back will be traced and you will be billed PLUS Service charges.

Same thing goes if you dont gas the car up to the level you left it with they charge you a LOT more than a gas station.

Yes, that seems to be the one. She just wanted to pay it but he was really pissed off because there is not a single sign around advising that it is illegal to park overnight. I heard that there was some sort of bylaw about this but having never gotten a ticket for this sort of infraction, I couldn't advise them one way or the other. They decided to pay it though. It wasn't very much, like $15 or something. I do see his point though. How can someone from out of town know about Toronto bylaws? Shouldn't be signs advising of this 3 hour rule? It really does smack of having your pocket picked.
