I got a manual 4cylinder at the moment, but I'm so sick of the traffic in the city that I'm almost tempted to get an auto in the next car purchase which is soon.

I LOVE manual, but the damn stop and go drives me nuts.

Would you guys say stick with manual, since in the winter, manual comes out the clear winner...or go with auto.

Let's hear it

I am with you on this one. For Toronto driving,
and on the 401, QEW, go for automatic.

One of the problems with a "dogamatic" is that your performance will suck when you switch. Any 4 banger I've driven with an auto is a POS. If you want to accelerate you stamp on the gas and the only thing that happens is the tranny shifts to ultra low and the engine revs and pfft, you don't accelerate.

The ONLY way I'd drive a 4 banger with an auto is if they came with a cruise/perfomance switch or such.

Ya I know, I have a 4-cyl manual now.
I was just hoping that auto would be good enough these days with 4-cylinders, I guess not.

If I did not live in Toronto I would say stick with the stick, but honestly, I found shifting to be such a pain that I went auto and don't regret it at all.

2000 Ford Focus 4-cyl auto --> didn't have a lot of pep

2008 Toyota Yaris 4-cyl manual --> lots of pep

I prefer the manual, but it is definitely a pain in stop-and-go traffic and/or getting going on steep inclines as compared to the automatic.

Guess you need to decide whether the convenience of auto is worth the trade-off in pep to you.

Manual transmissions cost less than automatics (about 1000 dollars), plus they save about 3% on gas, which amounts to roughly a free tank of gas every year

Besides, don't you get used to switching gears? I'm not really aware of the fact that I'm doing it any more.

I don't mind switching gears, but when I hit traffic or some retards on the road, I hate it. :p

TIPTRONIC TRANSMISSION for 4 bangers. Easy as an automatic in traffic but the pep of a standard when you want to have fun.
Personally I prefer an 8 cylinder motor as I drive alot more on highways than in a city.

There are 4 cylinder auto cars that have more than enough power.
(i.e. Audi A3 2.0L 200HP, Acura TSX 2.4L 200hp, Mazda3 2.5L 167hp)

Make your decision based on driving usage and not testosterone level. :)

Good point!! I guess I was thinking along the lines of econo-boxes instead of performance 4 bangers.....

Aren't Acura's glorified Hondas?
Not that I'm bashing them, but that's what I was told.
As for repairs and maintenance, how do they compare with say, Civics and Accords?

Auto? WTF is wrong with you guys? Stick is the only way to drive. Of course, I'm not in Toronto traffic, so...

I prefer a manual, but haven't owned one for years as the traffic in the GTA is just brutal. Also agree with comments on 4 bangers being gutless with automatics, unless you go to a "performance" vehicle.

Still, I miss the manual transmission, just seems more like driving than auto-pilot...

I used to drive a honda civic with a stick and it was a blast to bomb around town in. Even my ranger pickup was fun with the 3.0 V6 but yeah, the traffic wasn't worth the fun times.

i drove manual my whole life, when i get into an autobox i cringe and never really understand why someone would want to do that to themselves. Except if you are a paraplegic or missing a foot or arm there is no point to get an auto. In traffic i just glide along in second gear and i find that very rarely i need to brake. Plus think about the associated costs for an automatic.
Initial cost 1000$,
Tranny rebuild 1500$,
Extra fuel cost 100$,
Saving your car from an iminent crash in winter, priceless!

Go manual, suck it up, and don't look back. Lets stop being a couch potato society :D

The other issue is the unavailability of manuals in a lot of cars, they just don't come with it. European cars are the exception to that, but ever try to get a manual Acura TL? Or just about anything Ford, GM or Chrysler that has 4 doors?

As to having a coffee, if I managed with a 5 speed with no cup holder, I think I can manage with a cup holder!

And mymojosup, if you can glide in second in stop and go traffic, I'd like to see it. You must not be hitting the full stop and go that this city is full of if you can "glide".
