First Kessel goes off on the media today.. and now they're threatening to sue TSN... time to circle the wagons boys...

"On behalf of our clients Dion Phaneuf, his wife Elisha Cuthbert and Joffrey Lupul, we have sent a letter to TSN demanding that TSN issue a formal apology and pay a significant amount of damages to each of our clients for broadcasting a false and defamatory tweet during their trade deadline show yesterday. We are sending a similar letter to the author of the tweet, Mr. Anthony Adragna.

"It is bad enough that there are people who spend their time using social media to publish such false and malicious stories, but it is made much worse when a reputable media outlet like TSN gives broad circulation and credibility to these false stories by republishing them as TSN did.

"If TSN and Mr. Adragna do not immediately comply with the demands set out in our letters, we have instructions from our clients to immediately commence a lawsuit against them.

"Our clients will not be discussing this matter with the media. Any questions should be directed to the undersigned."

I understand suing the tweeter and I hope they win but do they have a case against tsn? Didn't they already apologize and remove the tweet?

I'm no lawyer but I guess it's better to include everyone and have the courts sort it out later... you wouldn't want to exclude someone and then have the judge say, "Sorry but you should have really sued so-and-so"...

Also, because TSN provided the vehicle for the tweet to be noticed by a bigger audience, they are likely at fault in some form... and just because you apologize and remove the tweet doesn't mean it didn't exist. Did you suddenly forget about it because they apologized. No, in fact, it likely drew more attention to the controversy.

But it didn't take long for TSN to offer up a mea culpa...

On Monday when TSN was reporting on the NHL trade deadline it displayed a scrolling ticker of tweets from the public.

In spite of TSN's protocols to prevent unfounded and inappropriate tweets from making it to air, a false, and inappropriate tweet was allowed to run.

There was no basis for the false allegation made in this tweet.

TSN unreservedly apologizes to Joffrey Lupul, Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert and regrets any embarrassment this unfortunate incident has caused to them.

Isn't this the same broad that was banging Sean Avery before she shacked up with Phaneuf?

Was there a rumor going a around that this was going on???

This guy is an employee for TSN??
According to people I know who have their ear to the ground, the rumor is not true.
The guy who tweeted it is likely some frustrated fan who thought he could just blurt this out on the internet and nobody would notice

And he is not an employee for TSN, this I know for a fact...

Yes.. Avery got in trouble for referring to her as his sloppy seconds... didn't help his career at the time
I hear he's doing okay in his second life as some fashionista gopher!

How old is the culprit? Some kid in his mom's basement? They want monetary damages besides an apology lest they sue. That kid is in deep caca.

I think this is mostly a scare tactic to try and ensure it doesn't happen in the future... From what I've read, the tweeter apologized and tried to shift the blame on TSN, saying he didn't know it would get broadcast on air and whatnot.. but he still published the tweet which makes him liable.. I'm sure he's crapping his pants in his mom's basement.. would be surprised if this actually went to court... Remember also that Bell is part owner of MLSE, which owns the Leafs and Bell also owns TSN.. .so I'm sure they'll do a lot of backroom bargaining to make this go away

I see. Someone showed me the tweet on their smart phone. Idiotic thing to do when you know it's going to be published on the air, but everything posted on the internet is fair game too. People must be careful how they word things.

The idiot deserves to be held accountable for his tweet. i have no sympathy for him and instead feel bad for anyone at TSN who might be getting blamed for not catching it before it went to air. He or she might lose their job because of this shithead and there'll likely be no attention paid to that.

Initially, the guy or gal who let this slip through was likely going to get a reprimand... but now that it's reached this level - public apologies and legal threats - I wouldn't be surprised if they did lose their job... or got severely demoted. I know people who work there and Bell is ruthless compared to the previous owners

I am sure they have been fired.

The proceeds will go to "Save The Leafs From Themselves" Foundation

Seriously could the team get any worse (don't answer)

Dion Panaeuf and Lupul have hired a law firm to represent them against TSN for airing the ugly tweet despite an apology by the network

Can't find the exact tweet but it was a reference to adultery by a man named Anthony Adranga. Not cool.

Lupul is coming across a as bully here tho imho. Tell the "man" to piss off sure but fight someone you know you can easily "Rag Doll" A bit much don't you think?

On second thought tho given the Leafs' record on "beating" opponents...Lupul should proceed with caution.
Merging threads.
