Oklahoma House Passes Bill to Revoke Medical Licenses of Abortion Providers

Under bill, doctors performing abortions could have their licenses revoked if the mother's life is not in danger.

The Oklahoma State House passed a bill on Thursday that would revoke the medical licenses of doctors who perform abortions with the sole exception of situations that threaten the life of the mother, according to Tulsa World. If signed into law, the legislation would all but ban the procedure.

Sponsored by Rep. Jim Olsen, R-Roland, House Bill 1182 passed along party lines in a 71-21 vote.

Tulsa World reported that the bill “would revoke for one year the medical licenses of doctors performing abortions except when a women’s life is in danger,” though it “specifically excludes the women’s mental state as a consideration in such decision.”

Oklahoma Republicans appear unafraid of defying the courts, apparently taking inspiration from the state’s recent legalization of marijuana for medical use. Olsen noted that while marijuana remains illegal according to federal law, the state allows its use for certain medical conditions. The same concept could be applied to abortion, he said.

Olsen also said lawmakers can derive authority from a court even higher than the U.S. Supreme Court:

“We are told the (U.S.) Supreme Court is the supreme law of the land, that we cannot protest its decision,” he said during debate. “There is a court even higher than the Supreme Court. There is the court of God. Abortion is a violation of the law of God.”
