The Chicago BlackHawks say they are not changing their name, they are honouring the Saux Indians war leader of that name. He fought against President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act that took away their ancestral lands, which today make up Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and the Michigan Peninsula. Jackson lived up to his reputation as an Indian exterminator, the tribe lost half its population before they were moved to reservations in Arkansas. Part of the tribe escaped and settled in BC. Before he became President, he conducted a war of decimation against the Seminoles of Florida.

Couldn't agree more about the name Argonauts. One of the best names in sports. Too bad not many want to go see them, even when they've been decent.
I say don’t name the team at all, Just Washington and that’s it. This way they can say they are playing it safe so not to offend anyone.
The definitive answer the proper name is.......Pig Skins!!

In many cases, referencing indigenous groups is not a problem Braves, Seminoles, and Chiefs are names that have neutral or positive connotations. Redskins and Eskimos are both demeaning terms.

Jeff Blair, who's as Liberal as it gets, had a indigenous leader from out west on the other day. This is the fan590. and he said that the community had a strong relationship with the Eskimos and that neither him or his people considered the term Derogatory. Blair was stunned,lol..He opened before his guest came on that given the social justice era we are in that the name will have to be changed. Well there was dead silence when the indigenous shot down that idea. They quickly segued into how covid has affected his people,lol..It was beautiful to listen to. It was last Thursday at around 4 in the afternoon.
I've heard it is an east-west thing. Here in the east, the Inuit aren't too fond of the term Eskimo. Out west, there are a mix of arctic and sub-arctic people - not just inuit - and Eskimo as a general term isn't looked on as a big deal.
That may be wrong, but that was I remember hearing from some Alaskans.
New name will likely either be something wicked boring like 'Senators' (politically themed) or something like 'Warriors' which will immediately be labelled as equally offensive and racist as 'Redskins'... either way, their merchandising revenue and brand loyalty will be toast.
They should be called the Washington Nudniks, which is what they have become since Dan Snyder took over.
Washington Generals...the football team is bad enough that the Harlem Globetrotters opponents might have more victories this year.
Looks like for the near future they will be called The Washington Football Team.

Is there any reason why they can't be called the "Capitals"? I heard that New York at one time had the New York Giants (baseball) and the New York Giants (football). Sp, how about Washington Capitals (hockey) and Washington Capitals (football).
