New York Rangers Issue Statement On Tom Wilson Situation

The New York Rangers are extremely disappointed that Capitals’ forward Tom Wilson was not suspended for his horrifying act of violence last night at Madison Square Garden. Wilson is a repeat offender with a long history of these type of acts and we find it shocking that the NHL and their Department of Player Safety failed to take the appropriate action and suspend him indefinitely. Wilson’s dangerous and reckless actions caused an injury to Artemi Panarin that will prevent him from playing again this season. We view this as a dereliction of duty by NHL head of player safety, George Parros, and believe he is unfit to continue in his current role.

The Rangers are not pulling any punches with that statement. It will be interesting to see what, if any, reply comes from the NHL.

If Panarin is concussed as a result of Wilson's idiotic actions then it is hard to understand that only a fine was levied. Does anyone know if there is an appeal mechanism available to the Rangers?

Reminder that Nazem Kadri was suspended for the balance of a playoff series (twice) for significantly less.
I'm not defending Kadri whatsoever, what he did was dirty, but, perspective.

Panarin is out for the season but it’s not because of a concussion- apparently he suffered a “lower body” injury after Wilson wrestled him to the ice.

I’m not sure where the Rangers are going with this statement unless they are considering some sort of legal action? I don’t think there is any other formal appeal process.

Brutal yes, then again when you crash the net expect retaliation.

I disagree with you on the Kadri hits- as I recall those were very clear and obvious cheap shots that Naz took on his opponents. That’s why fans were so angry with Naz- it was undisciplined play at crucial moments in the playoffs.

I am not a fan of Tom Wilson nor of fighting in hockey, players policing themselves, etc...I’m kind of a snowflake in that regard. But...to be honest, I didn’t think the Wilson take down on Panarin seemed all that bad, especially in light of the fact that Panarin jumped on Wilson’s back while he was wrestling with someone else...so, what was Wilson supposed to do? Panarin kinda brought that on himself in my opinion. Overall, I would agree with the League’s decision- they saw it as typical wrestling around the net that happens regularly in NHL games.

I think this is James Dolan (the Rangers owner) being a crybaby...it wouldn’t be the first time. Last I heard Dolan was still fighting with Spike Lee over a problem with Spike’s accessing the back entrance of the Gardens on his way to his court side seats for a Knicks game.

GTA & Thereabouts...
Panarin was within an eyelash of a severe injury... His head just missed the ice, his face just missed Wilson's skate...

Lifelong hockey fan and I play. Wilson is truly insane/unhinged in my opinion. I would love for his career to be ended (<-- first player I've ever said that about)

Jesus fuck has the NHL ever gotten soft. All I heard all day was about this crazy Tom Wilson incident. I couldn't believe it when I saw what all the fuss was about. 10 years ago that would happen 5 times a game. It was a tiny bit worse then your average scrum. Wow times have changed.

yip, sounds like a BS decision by the NHL perhaps favouritism to Washington going into the playoffs. Goon show Wilson should have gotten 10 games minimum. What a joke.

I thought the Leafs were a dirty team. I wouldn't mind a Leafs vs Capitals clash if the Leafs get out of the North division. Simmonds vs Wilson....Oh baby! Maybe Leafs may even put Scott Sabourin in the lineup.

In the 2018 Cup Final, Tom Wilson ran at several Golden Knights players

This was the third hit, in the game, Wilson took from Ryan Reaves the season after.

Punching the ranger bloke in the head when he was down on ice at the beginning of the scrum was the worst offence by wilson. Suspension for that.

You understand that the NHL hired a former goon who looks after handing out suspensions right? I'm not surprised about the non-suspension.

Wilson should have been suspended for driving Buchnevich's head into the ice and punching him, not for what he did with Panarin.

Not much to see here really.....Hockey is still a game of intimidation and Tom Wilson is a master at it.

Panarin sealed his fate when he jumped on his back. He's better off grabbing someone else who shouldn't be involved.

Wilson is the guy you hate playing against but would love if he was on your team. He ensures higher skilled teammates are given a wide birth out there. He also a decent player to boot.

I'm telling you man, I kept hearing it about it all day on the radio, and couldn't fucking believe this is what they were talking about.
