The NHL should have suspended him for 3 or 4 games.

Let’s remember the whole sequence — he gave a minor piledrive to bushnevich, punched him in the back of the head while he was on the ice, ragged Panarin more dangerously then needed in a scrum and before a fight had started. Take downs do happen but usually more so when fights have commenced. Taken individually none are suspension worthy by another player. But to have 3 or 4 reckless acts in about 15 seconds by one player with a history does open the door to special judgments.

In their release the NHL could have easily said that the sequence was a series of reckless events by Wilson. While considered on an individual basis none of these may not be suspension worthy, but measured as a whole over all reckless actions committed by Wilson in the sequence, and considering the players long history of recklessness a suspension is the correct conclusion.

I don’t think anybody would have been pissed by the conclusion except for Wilson and the Caps and some of their fans. But even then it’s just a rest before the playoffs. Wilson has earned extra scrutiny.

The NHL would look so much better by doing this:
- less media attention
- avoid the possible shitshow tonight
- and they are not setting a precedent by this communication either if some other player does one of the actions above.

Jesus fuck has the NHL ever gotten soft. All I heard all day was about this crazy Tom Wilson incident. I couldn't believe it when I saw what all the fuss was about. 10 years ago that would happen 5 times a game. It was a tiny bit worse then your average scrum. Wow times have changed.
I agree...it's a lot softer than when you played in the League...you had to be really tough then.

This is a sensible post.

Someone suggested going after the Caps non fighters. Well, that would just lead to more punishment to the Rangers non fighters. They don't win with that strategy.

Could you provide us with any evidence that an incident (series of) like this would occur 5 times a (every?) game.

Wilson should have been suspended for driving Buchnevich's head into the ice and punching him, not for what he did with Panarin.
I agree with that. And given Wilson's track record, the rest of the regular season would have been an appropriate suspension.

The rangers fired their president and gm today. I am sure the message would have needed sign off from president John Davidson who is apparently highly respected in league circles.

Odd timing — Could be performance related as well.. that is what the team is claiming. But makes you wonder a bit.

One rumour I read is that James Dolan, the idiot rangers and knicks owner thought the letter made the team look wimpy. He was pissed the team that the Rangers were building lacked the personnel to physically fight back.

Three fights break out at centre ice after one second tonight and Wilson was not even on the ice. Now up to 6

A display like this, in MSG of all places, hurts the game and is exactly what the league did not want to happen and warned the teams in advance.

Ironically, the league could have ensured that it didn't happen if they'd given Wilson a 2 or 3 game suspension. It's their own fault that the game is being shamed.

Elliotte Friedman is an assclhat. His big observation he has to make was to commend Tom Wilson for holding up and not hammering somebody from the semi blind side in the first.

If the league did not want this, they would take fighting out of the game.

It didn't take long for the New York Rangers to retaliate to Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson's antics.
A line brawl featuring all six forwards erupted on the ice in the opening seconds of the game Wednesday after Wilson injured Rangers leading scorer Artemi Panarin in Monday's contest.

The Rangers organization took exception to the NHL opting not to suspend Wilson and instead levying a $5,000 US fine, the maximum allowable under the league's collective bargaining agreement.
The opening three fights were only a sign of things to come, as three more broke out in the first period alone, including Wilson taking on Rangers defenceman Brendan Smith.

As soon as Washington forward Tom Wilson steps on the ice for his 1st shift of the game, New York defenceman Brendan Smith instigates a fight with Wilson. 1:22
In the second period, Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich was handed a game misconduct and five-minute major for cross-checking Capitals forward Anthony Mantha.
Wilson later left the game with an upper-body injury, although it was unclear when the injury occurred.
The on-ice actions may not have been the only repercussions of Wilson's post-whistle takedown of a helmetless Panarin and punch to the back of Buchnevich's head.

The Rangers fired president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton on Wednesday, reportedly due to dissent over whether to release a team statement Tuesday targeting NHL senior vice-president of player safety George Parros for his inaction against Wilson.
The Rangers' statement called Wilson's behaviour a "horrifying act of violence."

"Wilson is a repeat offender with a long history of these type of acts and we find it shocking that the NHL and their Department of Player Safety failed to take the appropriate action and suspend him indefinitely," the Rangers said.
"Wilson's dangerous and reckless actions caused an injury to Artemi Panarin that will prevent him from playing again this season. We view this as a dereliction of duty by NHL Head of Player Safety, George Parros, and believe he is unfit to continue in his current role."
Wilson was given a double-minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. The fine represents 0.12 per cent of Wilson's $4.1 million salary for this season.

I think James Dolan is completely losing his shit.

yeah, it started to change right about the time you really started to hone your skills in ballet.

BTW, what's new and exciting in the world of curling? I'm sure that's a sport you probably big fan of.
