Who am I?

I was drafted as a two-way player after my Senior season at the University of Florida with the sixth pick of a Major League Baseball draft.

As a College Junior, I tied an NCAA record by hitting a home run in nine consecutive games.

I was the second player from my Draft class to reach the Major Leagues.

I tore the ulnar collateral ligament in my left elbow in a post season all star game following my Senior College season, requiring Tommy John surgery. I have not pitched competitively since.

I exceeded the minimum statistics to be a qualified rookie in the season in which I made my Big League debut.

I went from being drafted to playing at each of the A+, AA, AAA and Major League levels in a span of less than one calendar year, over a two year period.

I hit a home run during the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

This NHL coach was fired by playoff bound teams in the last nine games of the season by two different teams in two different seasons. Name the coach, the teams, and the years.
Answer: Robbie Ftorek.
In 1999/2000 by the New Jersey Devils, who went on to win the Cup under Larry Robinson.
In 2002/2003 by the Boston Bruins who went on to be eliminated in the first round under Mike O'Connell(team GM).

I don't own him in fantasy but I wish I did. Jac Caglianone, Kansas City Royals.

Four schools which have been members of the NCAA for 100 or more years have never played in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Name as many as you can.
William & Mary, The Citadel, University of Denver, Army.

In 1968, the West Point Black Knights, led by coach Bobby Knight and Point Guard Mike Krzyzewski, declined an NCAA Tournament bid because Knight thought they had a chance to win the NIT Tournament, but they had no chance to defeat UCLA, led by Lew Alcindor.

Byron Buxton, (542 plate appearances in 2025). Buxton also stole 24 bases, without being caught in 2025.
That's a pretty amazing dual stat. Definite pump up to the WAR.

There have been four instances in which both a father and his son have been part of Championship teams in NCAA Men's Basketball.

In all cases, the father and son have the same surname.

Name as many as you can.
Scott May, (Indiana 1975-76) and Sean May, (North Carolina 2004-05).

Henry Bibby, (UCLA 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72) and Mike Bibby, (Arizona 1997).

Derek Smith, (Louisville 1979-80) and Nolan Smith, (Duke 2009-10).

Marques Johnson, (UCLA 1974-75) and Kris Johnson, (UCLA 1994-95).

Who was a member of three consecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championship teams, AND a member of the NBA Championship team the following year?
Henry Bibby.

Bibby was a member of the NCAA Championship UCLA teams in 1969-70, 1970-71 and 1971-72, and he won an NBA Championship ring as a member of the 1972-73 New York Knicks. Bibby was a DNP-CD in all five games of the 1972-73 NBA Finals as understudy to Walt 'Clyde' Frazier.

In the 2025 Major League Baseball Season, there was one qualified* player who was in the top 5 for both fewest times striking out and fewest times drawing a base on balls.

* minimum 502 plate appearances.

What's his name?
Athletics' rookie Shortstop Jacob Wilson had 27 Walks and Struck Out 39 times in 523 plate appearances.

Jacob Wilson 2025 game logs

Wilson was leading the American League in batting average well into June, 2025, and eventually finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting behind team mate Nick Kurtz, who received all of the 1st place votes.

@K Douglas: Nick Kurtz was the first player from the 2024 Draft Class to reach the Majors, followed by Jac Caglianone and Chase Burns.

Who holds BOTH of these Major League Baseball records?

1) Fewest walks allowed per 9 innings pitched* in a season, (Modern Era, post 1900), and

2) Fewest pitches thrown in a 9 inning complete game, (since 1957; there are no previous verifiable statistics).

* Qualified pitchers, minimum 162 IP.

Hint: Ask yourself if I would ask this question if the answer was Greg Maddux.
In 2005, Minnesota Twins' pitcher Carlos Silva walked 9 batters, (two of them intentionally), in 188 innings pitched. On May 20 of that season, he had a nine inning complete game victory while throwing only 74 pitches.

A guy named Charles 'Red' Barrett allegedly made 58 pitches in a 9 inning complete game on August 10, 1944, but I did specify after 1956.

Major League Baseball instituted an amateur draft in 1965. Before that, all unsigned players were unrestricted free agents who could negotiate their initial contract with any team.

Which pre-1965 amateur player received the largest signing bonus?

Hints:

He has one World Series championship ring.

His only service time in the American League was during the 'Blue Jays Era', (ie: post 1976).

He played in 100 or more games in each of his first 13 full seasons in the Majors.

He was once the major player in a 2 for 1 trade for a former Most Valuable Player. He and the former MVP were later teammates for less than a third of one season.

At one time, the image of a comic strip character was painted on a seat in the upper deck of the Houston Astrodome, marking the spot where one of his home runs had landed.
Former Montreal Expo Bob Bailey.

Bailey received a then record $175,000 signing bonus from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1961, during a brief period at the beginning of the Expansion Era when there were no limits to bonus amounts.

He won a World Series ring with the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, and ended his career with the Boston Red Sox in 1977-78.

Prior to the 1967 season, Bailey was traded from the Pirates with Gene Michael to the Los Angeles Dodgers for 1962 NL MVP Maury Wills. Wills and Bailey played together for the 1969 Expos until Wills was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers with Manny Mota for Paul Popovich and Ron Fairly on June 11, when the trade deadline was June 15. Popovich never played for the Expos. He was flipped to the Chicago Cubs for Jack Lamabe and Adolfo Phillips that same day.

On August 16, 1970, Bailey hit the longest home run in the history of the Houston Astrodome*, reaching the 4th deck. His nickname was "Beetle", after the comic strip character Beetle Bailey, and an image of Beetle Bailey was painted on the seat hit by his home run ball.

*Bailey's record home run distance at the Astrodome was later topped by Mike Piazza.
