Netflix's password-sharing crackdown is coming. It already looks grim.

Password sharing is over, it will be limited to the household. Unless you know to simulate the same IP address.

Netflix, the streaming giant headquartered in the Bay Area, has been threatening a substantial password-sharing crackdown for months. This week, the company finally started to roll out some of its changes. As expected, they are gobsmackingly awful and indeed reviled by everyday users, privacy advocates and even famed musicians. Rightfully so: The new policies represent an invasive, unsustainable solution to a “problem” other streaming services don’t seem too worried about solving.

Netflix’s latest changes, which are currently on trial in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru (where it has tried to enforce other troubling password measures), would require you to log into your account from your “household” — basically, the place you primarily use the service — at least once every 31 days. Attempting to sign in from a location other than your household could result in your account being blocked unless you pay more to add extra users.

These updates were posted on the company’s U.S. help page this week, causing an instant uproar. A spokesperson for Netflix later told the Streamable that the guidelines had been posted by accident, but it is more than likely that this change will come for users stateside too.
The naivety on display here from Netflix executives is truly remarkable. Users who already refuse to pay a mere $10 per month for the service’s ad-free experience won’t be inclined to start paying now just to appease the bottomless maws of shareholders and C-suite execs. People online have already started deliberating the merits of returning to torrenting and shady streamers to avoid having to pay for multiple Netflix subscriptions.

It is ironic. There was a time when Netflick encouraged password sharing to expand their subscriber base. Sort of buy one get one free.

Netflix is going to lose even more subscribers. What idiot at their HQ decided this would be a good idea for the bottom line? Netflix did have a good run.

How does this work? What about the app when travelling? What about someone like me that has a second home in the summer?

I’m paying for a stream anywhere service and can’t take it anywhere now? I will just stop paying and do Kodi for Netflix stuff.

Exactly. Those are kind of the reasons alot of Netflix users have it in the first place. Something to watch on the road and summer at the lake.

Lot's of noise over nothing.

First of all, they're doing a trial of password sharing crackdown is Latin America only.

Secondly, a paid Netflix subscriber will have an option of verifying account regardless of streaming location. Google and Microsoft have a similar thing on their platforms, where you're notified via email or SMS of logins from unknown device.

Thirdly, it'll hardly affect their subscription base. Those who paid will remain paid customers. Those who mooched off friends and family will have to start paying. Seems like a fair deal.

If I can’t watch at home and at the trailer because I am limited to a single household or I can’t watch while on the road for touring, I will no longer remain a paid customer. I can tell you that. I don’t think I will be the only one. I don’t think we will put Netflix out of business by no longer being a customer either though.

You'll still have an ability to watch Netflix on whatever device from any location. The question would be: can you and family member watch Netflix at the same time from different locations and single Netflix account?

I don’t think so. I pay for 2 profiles now so that 2 people can be on at the same time. If I want my dad to be able to watch as well at that time, either one of us ( my brat and I) would be kicked off or he would have to wait. I thought that was regardless of household but Look at the terms and service. It now says 2 devices only but in the same household.

Similar to a PayPal account, or a gaming account with Steam. Login with password is not required when you use the device recognized for access. You need to provide the login and password if you access from a different machine.

You have 1 paid account, meaning 1 login email and password to it. You can create multiple profiles which let you keep track of who watched what, receive suggestions, have favorite list etc. My account has 5 different profiles, but I only pay for 1 account. All I need is a login and password on a device and I'm in. Some of those profiles are friends and family.

Prime Video or Disney+ for example keep track of your verified deviced, meaning their system knows what devices account is using (MAC, IP address etc).

You have one paid account but can all the profiles be logged in at once. I don’t think so. I have one account and can make as many profiles as I want too but not all those profiles can watch at the same time. That has been my experience. I have a standard plan

Everyone one of my 5 profiles uses same login and password. We all can watch at the same time, regardless of location. My household can watch on 2-3 TVs using our profile, while friends and family watch on theirs. Never been a problem.

Strange!!!! So my ex had a profile for his kids, my daughter and me. I would be at the trailer and his kids where at their home and my daughter at home and she wouldn’t be able to watch if me and the ex’s kids were watching.

What plan do you have if you don’t mind me asking? I have standard; maybe you have premium? Which allows up to 4 users at one time.
