True incompetence by the Liberal government . This would have been very easy to vet. All a government employee would have to have done is to type in a SIN number to see if the applicant filed a tax return. I guess that's to much to aske from a federal employee. A total loss of $1.7 billion . The estimates foe CERB were $24 billion. The total is already at $81 billion. The CRA can't explain who these people received payments. Our federal government is a joke!

Many poor and disadvantaged people do not file tax returns. They have no access to accountants.

They are the ones that needed the cash the most.

I renewed my driver's license, health card and all car licenses. Why would you want any hassle from expired licenses and cards?

Are you trying to pocket the interest of $500 for a year?

That's a BS excuse. The government has a program where you get your taxes done for free if you are below a certain income. It's most likely ineligible people filed because they knew there wasn't any vetting. Truly irresponsible and incompetent. The Liberals are a joke when it comes to fiscal responsibility.

No, it is not. I have done tax returns for disadvantaged people (volunteering), and it was clear that many of them did not normally get their taxes done, and therefore missed some benefits, as for example rent support.

It is easy to forget that there is a whole section of our society that gets by on welfare and disability payments, and do not make $80,000 a year and do not have access to accountants and lawyers.

Please be a little humble and realize that you are fortunate, and do not have a mental illness that puts you into the bottom of our society.

You obviously don’t know how the government works and the strict laws that must be obeyed with respect to access to information by government employees. In addition, a major objective of the CERB was to deliver the benefits in a timely manner, and then to verify who was eligible. Many recipients were literally without any funds to hear their homes, pay rent, and buy necessities. If you disagree with helping the needy during a crisis, I suggest you move to the U$A where aid has been held up.

They obviously didn't qualify for CERB and get other forms of government assistance. Will the Liberals go after these 'Poor" people? They said they would go after anyone who didn't qualify and who applied and received it. If these people get by on welfare and disability they don't qualify for CERB. They committed fraud. Will the federal government go after them? In another thread Bver Hunter said they would.. Do you think people who already receive government support are entitled to another $2,000 a month? This program wasn't meant for them.

That's BS. How long would it take to type in a SIN number to see if someone paid taxes? 2 seconds? Your timely manner point is also BS as this would be easy to vet. If you're receiving a government handout they can vet you to make sure you qualify. How else would they know? All they had to do was view a tax return from the previous year. I have no issue with people who qualified getting CERB receiving it but to me it's ridiculous that some CERB recipients are making more money now then they did when they were working and some recipients didn't even work and are receiving it. You don't have a problem with that?

Again, you just don’t know how the government works and why it does so. You just can’t get all that information with just one key stroke. Nobody has that authority. And, I will emphasize to you again that they acknowledged that the system would be susceptible to false claims, but they didn’t want to lose time to get benefits to the needy. No system is perfect, not one in the world. You will always have someone who will milk the system, either innocently or wilfully. However, risks have to be taken to help those who legitimately need the help.

That is the liberals fault for designing the CERB as they did

You are only eligible for CERB if you have stopped working because of COVID-19.
If the poor and disadvantage people were not working before covid , then covid-19 did not impact their income

If you are working, (legally) then there is a T4 slip for you & CRA thus has your SIN number & you should have filed a return
Yet as the headline says
More than 800,000 Canadians who didn't file a tax return received CERB

The estimates for CERB were $24 billion. The total is already at $81 billion. (as per Gooseifur)

Big government = Big waste, poor execution & missed objectives

And no doubt you will support Justin (the fool) Trudeau's "Great Reset" as he redesigns our economy and society.
This will end very badly as every initiative Justin (the fool) makes does not pan out as planned
Hell this moron can not even travel without it turning into a clown show (India)

Right wingers are poor bashers.
not at all
I have far more empathy for low income earners than I do for ideologically driven fools, who post unsubstantiated pronouncements such as "Right wingers are poor bashers".without thinking

People on Ontario Works and ODSP are Unemployed.

CERB is for unemployed people.

Therefore Ontario Works / ODSP do qualify for CERB.

Or, people on welfare qualify for welfare.

The Liberals are desperate for poor people to vote Liberal, then Trudeau says poor people are going to be put in jail for collecting welfare. How does that work?
