One of the almost ignored sentences in the Christmas Story is the statement that "there was no room for them at the inn".
And this telling phrase seems terribly applicable today:
We have Donald Trump wanting to build a wall to keep the Mexicans out
We have Britain voting BREXIT to keep the Europeans and others out
We have CHINA ensuring that the Uighurs are kept out - in concentration camps
We have the Taliban in AFGHANISTAN who want to keep out all those who do not follow their own brand of Islam
We have INDIA where the new CAA coupled with the NCR will ensure that only Muslims who cannot prove their identity will be kept out - in detention camps.
We have the EUROPEANS in many countries who refused to allow the Syrian Refugees to enter.
We have FRANCE and some other EUROPEANS countries who want to keep Africans out
We have Myanmar with a Nobel Laureate for Peace heading their government, refusing to allow the Rohingyas in.
We have Poland which refuses to accept Muslims.
In many countries in Africa and other parts of the world, they want to keep the homosexuals out.
In short we are living in a world where KEEPING OTHERS OUT, telling them that there is NO ROOM IN THE INN for them is becoming widespread.
And so on this Christmas I wish that we can invite into our hearts and homes all those who are being kept out. And that we speak up for those who can't speak out. Lest we re-enact in our world today what Pastor Niemoeller wrote about himself in the time of Hitler and the Nazis:
First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out, because I was not one
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out, because I was not a Jew.
And then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me.
Wishing you all a Christmas and New Year filled with joy, the joy of including, rather than excluding.
