Ambulance chasers have better ethics. You don't have to pay the lawyer anything (be very careful of the fine print, though) unless you win...

So let me understand this.

Sleazebag securities fraudster Petit is convicted of cheating a bunch of vulnerable ordinary folks out of their life savings. Being resourceful, sleazebag Petit conceals $750,000 from the judge - who would have used it to compensate some of those pensioners who were ripped off. And sleazebag Petit bribes Schlapp, another arch sleazebag to go bribe sleazebag grifter president Trump and get a pardon so Petit can swag around and tell those broken old ladies he ripped off to go fuck themselves.

And somewhere the grift breaks down and sleazebag Petit doesn't get the sleazebag pardon he bribed sleazebag Schlapp to bribe sleazebag Trump to give him. And this is all reported in the sleazebag, lying, alt right, internet shit rag The Gateway Pundit - presumably because it has a hard-on for either Petit or Schlapp (or both). Or possibly because a sleazebag enemy of sleazebag Petit or sleazebag Schlapp bribed sleazebag shit-site Gateway Pundit to run the sleazy story.

Does anyone here really give a shit about any of this?

I'm hoping the DA brings a motion to force Schlapp to disgorge Petit's rancid money to pay a little more to some of his helpless victims.

That is not true. Not at all.

Some accident firms tote that around but then pick and choose the cases to make sure they are winning cases and then normally charge you 30% after you win.

Depends on your deal with the lawyer. Certain lawyers work on that basis. These are usually high volume personal injury claims lawyers, especially those that advertise widely. They vet the client's claim carefully and only take the "sure winners". As these are winner cases and the opponent is an insurance company, the lawyer is guaranteed of $$$$ at the end of the case. And usually both the claimant's lawyer and the insurance company want to settle quickly to save time and expense. So guaranteed quick $ for the lawyer and the lawyer can represent impecunious "ordinary joe and jane" clients and make $$$ off them.

The same deal often applies to lawyers who represent wrongful dismissal claims.

Most other lawyers, you're paying a retainer up front and an hourly rate with periodic interim accounts being rendered and another bill at the end of the case.

I thought about this before but it seems legit for a lawyer to be paid simply to lobby for a pardon without any guarantee of success. Don't know how easily they could justify $750,000 in billable hours though.
