Stage plays are a different matter. All lead actors have understudies who can take over for them from one day to the next.
In Film or TV production, there is a set amount of set days to get the project filmed. The hours don't matter so much, the days do.
If an actor should get hurt or sick and isn't able to work, then insurance would cover the extension of the days needed.
In Lohan's case (as in other unprofessional actors) the problem came from her showing up late, not showing up at all and not doing her scenes properly with other actors in regards to her being drunk, slurred dialogue, hissy fits and therefore the scheduled scenes for the day were not completed. At the end of filming, when the editor asks: "I need the scene where she goes out the secret door" or "I need the scene where she screws her sister over" and so forth, the director then says: "we didn't get to those scenes on those days". Now you have a shitty movie with too many missing gaps in it. The studio/network/production company had their investment pissed away.
Her ongoing incompetence due to her drinking and her failed rehab stints and legal problems finally put her out of the big players' radar. Hollywood executives and industry insiders commented that it would be difficult for Lohan to find employment until she could prove that she was sober and reliable, citing possible issues with securing insurance.
Maybe she is ok with not being in movies anymore. Acting is not all that glamorous anyway. And there’s alot more other fulfilling ways to make a living. Also her legacy from mean girls will continue for a long time. Looks like shes happy and set for life.
I'm sure she's not OK being unemployed for so long. I'm sure she misses the attention and she's fallen off all the studios' radar. She had to raise some $$$ of her own in order to hire herself in one of those dumb made-for-tv Christmas movies on Netflix now. Since no one is prepared to hire her, she has to hire herself. "A Day Late and a Dollar Short" is the phrase that comes to mind.
Her "Mean Girls" legacy must be watching Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried go on to obtain Oscar nominations and being cast in prestigious projects saying to herself: "That could have been me".
