Samsonov was the only one who showed up. He deserved better.
Murray was suppose to start. Perhaps he saw this coming as well.

Man that was sweet...Leafs played the Sens game and got out skated from what I could see.

Toronto was lucky they didn't get a few more past them.

Big win for DJ Smith and the Ottawa faithful. The fanbase has wanted his head for awhile now. This will keep them at bay for now.

Leafs didn't look like they wanted this game bad enough.

IMO It would be a huge mistake to trade Knies for a rental who’s a 34 year old ufa forward. Surely Kane or Horvat will add potency to the offence but I don’t think you can win without a defence that can withstand the extra physicality and intensified forechecking of playoff hockey.

When the goaltending is good to great the Leafs look excellent in the regular season but I‘m still seeing a defence that can be overpowered and intimidated into making mistakes. Holl and Benn are the only two who are strong enough and are willing to engage in physical puck battles, but Holl doesn’t always make the right decision in tight situations and Benn is 35 and no batter than a 3rd paring guy. Giordano is great but he’s 39.

If Dubas is allowed to go all in and use Knies as a trade bait, I’d hope he‘s looking for a younger top 4 d man who can play a physical style, protects the net front and still has more than a few months left on his contract. I don’t who fits that bill is available but I‘d rather he sits still than makes a move only to lose more valuable assets for a first round knockout.

IMHO the Leafs are stuck in the "twilight zone (sort of like the friend zone). They're a good team but probably not good enough win a round or two in the playoffs. What would an Auston Mathews or Marner fetch in the trade market?

I’m not sure what zone you’re in…

I can quickly think of 3 trades in sports that mad a huge difference.

1) Phil Esposito trade
2) Carter/Alomar trade
3) Leonard trade

There’s no question that the Leafs’ top four forwards are among the best quartets in the league and I like what I’ve seen from Bunting, Jarnrok, Holmberg and Kempt. I think the offence is good enough to compete. They can always add more depth but the priority should be on upgrading the defence for playoff hockey.

The calibre of talent on defence is just nowhere near the offence. Rielly is the highest paid d man but he’s just average on defence and ineffective on quaterbacking the pp with the lack of a lethal point shot. The depth have improved with Liljegren and Timmins but top end talent is missing. The goaltenders will need to have tremendous performances to give them a fair chance in a series against the likes of Lightning and Bruins.

A lot of contracts expire in 2023-4-5.

To a lesser extent, I recall back in the day(1980) the NY Islanders trading for Butch Goring(L.A.) at the trade deadline. Many pointed to that trade as the move that pushed them over the top, as they went on to win 4 cups in a row. It also started the trade deadline frenzy we experience every year.

I played golf with Billy Harris in Bermuda in the late 90's. I made sure that I made no reference to that trade.

Poor guy.
Brings to mind Mike Gartner. In 1994 at the deadline, with about 10 games left in the season, the Rangers traded him to Toronto. Well, as luck would have it, the Rangers went on to win the cup that year. In his stellar career I don't think he ever made it to the final, let alone win a cup.

Possible for the Leafs to lay an egg tonight. They are looking forward to flying south for 6-8 days. Some Leafs are heading to Pearson right after the game. The Bruins probably only have to put in %50 effort and end up with 2 pts. I hope Keefe can manage to get his team to empty the tank tonight.

Boston has lost their last 3 games to TB, Carolina, and Florida with the losses to TB and Carolina on the road in regulation.
Samsonov is 15-1-1 at home.
Leafs play down to lowly teams but play focused against the good teams.
Leafs have a winning record without Matthews.
This is also Boston's last game before the All Star break.
