There will always be some teams that will throw ridiculous money around, but not all. The higher demand he makes for money, the more he limits his options. Can he get the money? Likely. Will it be from a team that's a Cup contender? Odds are low. His decision will need to be a compromise between winning and getting rich on a mediocre to shitty team for a few years.

Finsihed 4th in mvp voting in 2019 and 4th in 2022. Two very unremarkable seasons in between them however — inconsistent career.
He’s an elite playmaker when on, rather than goal
I don’t think it’s a terrible deal in the context of some of the other 6m contracts given to much more close to average forwards.
For example the Rakell deal was far worse in my view at 6m
Actually, he's averaged 68pts per season career. If you take out his one exceptional season (last season) that avg. falls to 61 and his goals per season avg falls to 21. Is a 21 goal / 60 point per season guy really worth almost $10M per season over 7 years? Add to that he's currently 30 years old. I think last season was an aberration. I suspect his numbers will fall back to more closely align to is career avgs. and eventually people will begin to question "what the hell did we do paying this guy $10M per season!?
Do I have a crystal ball? Nope. All speculation.
So if you take out his best season his average falls…no kidding! I wouldn’t say the season he played one game fair for average purposes…he averages over a point a game in his career.
I agree, he's a good signing, but is he $9.75M per season good? Or did they overpay just to get a good player to go there...that was my original point.
