Anyone who's boated at night knows how difficult it is to see other boats if they don't have lights. As a boater myself, it drives me nuts when I see one. They're practically invisible, so dangerous.

Kevin O’Leary was on a boat involved in a fatal crash on Lake Joseph in Ontario Saturday night, according to a statement sent to Global News by his publicist.

“On late Saturday night, I was a passenger in a boat that was involved in a tragic collision with another watercraft that had no navigation lights on and then fled the scene,” the Canadian businessman and reality TV star said.

“I am fully cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation.”

According to West Parry Sound OPP, a 64-year-old Florida man and a 48-year-old Uxbridge woman are dead after two boats collided on Lake Joseph near Emerald Island in Seguin, Ont., at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Susanne Brito, the 48-year-old woman, died as a result of her injuries at the hospital on Tuesday, police say.

Ornge air ambulance confirmed to Global News that a woman was transported from Lake Joseph to Health Sciences North in Sudbury on Saturday.

According to officers, three other occupants in the involved boats suffered injuries but were treated and released from the hospital.

The 64-year-old Florida man who died has been identified as Gary Poltash, officers add.

“Right now, on the scene, we’re looking at the boats and a full investigation into reconstructing the collision,” Joe Scali, the West Parry Sound OPP’s media officer, said. “We’re also determining all parties involved and, of course, making sure all injuries are addressed as well.”

Scali told Global News in an email that police can’t confirm whether O’Leary was involved in the crash.

“No charges have been laid in the case at this time,” he said. “As such we are unable to comment on or identify either of the vessels’ operators and/or owners.”

O’Leary said he won’t be commenting further at this time.

“Out of respect for the victims families and to fully support the ongoing investigation I feel it is inappropriate to make further comments at this time,” the Shark Tank star said in the statement.

“My heartfelt prayers and condolences to the victims, the families and those affected by this loss.”

Police say their investigation is ongoing.

Lights or no lights, travelling at night on a boat at much speed increases danger a lot. Not saying she was going fast or anything, just using this as a reason to mention it. I've seen boats zooming across Lake Joe at 30 knots on the blackest night and think how you'd hit something without even seeing it.

I've seen boats zooming across Lake Joe at 30 knots on the blackest night and think how you'd hit something without even seeing it.

A boat doesn't have to being going very fast to kill you. Considering the fact that you can die from hitting your head on the ground from a standing position, being struck by an oncoming boat (just up on plane) is more than enough to kill you. Even two boats traveling at 8 knots each (closing speed of 16 knots) is more than enough. Especially if one boat is significantly larger than the other. As in, if one is a small tin boat.

The takeaway here is that one boat (allegedly) had no lights. Tough way to learn a lesson.

I was boating in Muskoka at night a couple weeks ago. I saw one boat with no lights and one with only a white stern light. I had no idea which direction he was going so I stopped and let him pass. Drives me nuts!

I always check my lights if I’m going to be out after dark that’s just common sense. A few years ago was coming back from the bars in Port Dalhousie & just about cut a fishing boat in half! Dude was fishing by himself a couple miles off shore & if my buddy didn’t yank the wheel last second we would have gone over him for sure. Scared the shit out of me & almost ejected two chicks we just met! He had the tiniest light you could put on a boat & said he almost had “the big one reeled in” when he heard us. Unless your deaf you can’t not hear 2000hp coming your way & decently bright bow lights pointing in your direction...fisherman are a strange breed

People who boat at night when the sky is black are morons u cant see nothin much ahead even with lights on. I was shocked years ago being in a boat at night going pretty fast who the hell would do that.. if i had to at night id inch along the shore. Always always always wear a life jacket in any boat.. sounds like in this case it wasnt pitch black yet

Boating 101: It is absolutely critical to have your nav lights on when moving or just sitting in the water and watching fireworks.

I don't care if I'm nailing fish; my lights go up when the sunlight is going down.

I'm sure the O'Leary's are bombing around on a Chris-Craft with GPS, etc. His wife could be travelling at any speed and wouldn't see a boat without its lights on. It would take very little speed to generate an impact that would kill someone.

So true, fishing on Balsam Lake can be tricky during summer. I went fishing for walleye once, never again, it's expensive and dangerous. We attached a flood light to the boat so that drunken yahoos on joy rides couldn't miss us. Hardly worth it no matter how delicious they are.

He has already told one lie about the other boat fleeing the scene. The driver of the other boat was a doctor and he was going ashore to get help after they phoned 911.
When you’re in a boating accident you don’t sit there in the middle of the water you get to land to get help especially if people are hurt.
