Homeowner's mortgage renewal denied over First Nations land claim
“I bought the place — now I don’t own it. I’m not giving it up.”

Tensions flare at the Richmond, BC town hall as one lifelong resident says he’s been paying taxes “for no reason at all” after learning his property could fall under Cowichan title.

the way it reads is a native tribe will take ownership of the property? If that’s accurate does the Canadian government compensate him?

Before people get hysterical, First Nations have already said they have no intention of driving out private property owners. Their beef is with the government.

As noted. It's likely the government that fucked up, went against the treaties as written, and will have to compensate the natives as needed. That the banks are dicking around is unfortunate. They need to be told to stop.

if you read the linked article and the subsequent one above it on the same page, where in there was a BC Supreme Court decision relating, in principle, to a specific legal principle being argued on a separate matter, you wouldn’t have to make up, hypothetical situations in your mind
The natives of that particular area have issued a public statement. They have no interest in a claim to any of these properties. It is just specific to some small peninsula that three tribes clean rights to.

But I can see the bank not wanting to take any risks. That’s how Canadian banks are.

They'll have to find the first person who set foot on the continent. His descendants can then lay claim to it all.
