From Friday to Saturday 22 people were shot in Chicago in the span of 20 hours- some of them fatally. In other words, a regular Chicago weekend. Didn't really make the news...
The southside of Chicago is a wasteland for many, many reasons. In many ways, it is like a ghetto. There are a flood of cheap guns coming in from Indiana, plus the drugs and turf wars. And the sad reality is that it doesn't really make the news when it's just a bunch of black people doing it. However, this shooting is big news because it happened in a affluent suburb filled with soccer moms and executive dads, most of whom are white. And, I'm speculating here, the victims were likely white. So, as fucked up as that is, it will garner a lot of coverage. And this happens here too. Remember the "Year of the Gun" about 20 years or so ago. Nobody said fuck all when it was just black people dying....but a shoot out on Yonge St. where a young white girl dies, and suddenly the police and news channels are all over it...
Here's an interesting and sad truth: Los Angeles has so many murders that the vast majority are never reported in the newspapers. Only the spectacular ones are.
