I am looking to go somewhere and have considered going to Cuba again, but.. I am hearing horror stories about the food, in fact I have heard no beer.. Looking mostly at Varadero,, but am open to anywhere with scuba diving in the area. Has anyone been lately and is it as bad as they say. I just got back from the Dominican Republic last week and food and service was no problem..

Unless you already are hooked up with a "paladar" (Cuban private home/restaurant) the food in Cuba is fucking awful. ESPECIALLY at the resorts. Having been to Cuba perhaps 15-20 time over 25+ years, I have stopped going.

Every year, the gringo prices kept going up and up while the quality and variety of the food kept going down. They are simply "slopping the pigs" with gruel.

The Cuban legends of of people just being happy to see you, being appreciative, and maids being appreciative of some trinkets and baubles, kids needing pencils, young women banging you for $40 etc etc are now, just that, legends.

The Cuban government and many in the tourism sector are simply exploiting tourists. Given the least they feel is required and charging right up to the tourists pain threshold.

I've also been going to the Dominican for maybe the last 15 years. Mostly the North Coast. Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Las Terrenas and elsewhere in Samana. Much better food, accommodations and attitude from the locals and local business'.

Varadero is not known for its scuba diving.

I've read that Cubans eat very healthy. Rice and beans are served in every meal
and little to no meat. Can't they afford sea food which must be abundant there?

The three failures of the revolution were breakfast, lunch and dinner.
But, the lefties tell us Cuba is a socialist paradise.

Anyway, get your Hep A and B shots and bring your own water.
Don't fall in love with Cuban women, you're just a ticket for them to escape that socialist paradise. There's a reason why Cubans risk their lives escaping in little wooden boats.

Been 15 years but I don't remember the food being atrocious at the resort. Not great. Had a couple of meals in private homes that were pretty good in a gut stuffing kind of way. The heat kind of killed my appetite. And our taxi driver took us to a beautiful, classy restaurant just across from the university on a tree lined avenue. Lovely décor. Wood paneling and whatever we had for lunch was great. No problem with finding pubs and beer.
Just found Cuba boring. Kind of melancholy.

I've never been to Cuba but everyone I know has said the food on the resorts have been shit. I have no interest in going to Cuba until the dictatorship falls.

Free education and medical care in Cuba. So, why are they risking their lives escaping to the U.S. (Florida specifically)?

If what I've read about their Cuban food is true I imagine
me as a Cuban would rather die to eat McDonald's fries
than to have free education and medical care.

If I may, you go to Cuba because it's cheap, not because of the food.

I am happy with my little Cuba Libre, my walks on the beaches and my local discotecas. If the food is too terrible you stick to the pasta/omelette bar.

I need to go back soon. Pura Vida!
