I have no clue on the answer to this but does the average black person really care about Mrs. Butterworth?
But she's curvy and sweet! Beloved! Wonder what Mr. Butterworth thinks about this whole business.
I think Betty Crocker was Hitler's first wife. You know, someone on the internet said that so I assume it must be true.
But seriously, from a marketing POV, a nice friendly smile helps raise the positive feeling for a product, which raises the likelihood of purchase. Thus where is the line? Shall all human images be removed? Sylvia's soul food in NYC sells versions of her food in supermarkets, with her smiling face in a chef hat, and she's an African American. Soupman too (aka soup nazi). Ok, so they are the owners hence empowered...but Chef Boyardee? The Quaker oats guy? We do draw lines all the time, the outright racist stuff removed, and now onto stereotypes...but where is the line there? The NY times had an article about the Native American who proudly drew the land o lakes butter Native American for the package. His son (i believe, maybe grandson) was disappointed that his father's work was removed.
It seems we do have to draw a line, but I cannot envision one that would please everyone. Hopefully I'm wrong.
