There seemed to be an over supply of fresh tomatoes last winter, as the price were lower than other winters. I love pineapples, there seems to be an over supply of that as well, they are on special for $1.68 this week. The products that have a short shelf life will go on sale as they ripen and must be sold at a low cost. The fast food places are not consuming fresh tomatoes as fast as they use to, so the supply is pushed to the supermarkets. According to the article in the OP the supply is being restricted by the US government and tomato paste and sauce may be in short supply.
