I think the point was to show us what a chinese medal of honour looks like. So this man is a highly decorated chinese miltary officer, unknown at moment, unless someone happens to know his name. It does look like a mass grave behind him, and perhaps thats where he earned the medal. We could create our own history for him if we want... I believe he lost a leg in the battle, but he saved a lot of lives.
