In a televised interview with TNT NBA analyst John Thompson on Thursday, the New Jersey Nets guard admitted that he did not push himself as hard as he should have in Toronto.

"In years past, no," he said.

"I was fortunate to have the talent...you get spoiled when you're able to do a lot of things. You see that you don't have to work at it. Now, with the all the injuries, I have to work harder; I'm a little hungrier. Getting a fresh start has made me want to attack the basket."

And how many millions was he collecting to learn this valuable lesson? Is there any wonder there is a disconnect between athletes and fans?

I just can't beleive that people actually thought he was playing hard.
He put more effort into his whinning than anything else
What is suprising is that he actually admitted to it.

He stopped trying after the 2001 season. This guy can't handle either the physical pressure or the mental pressure of being a professional b-ball player.

He will only try when his mommy tell's him to try. Mommy knows best guys.

..Carter just admitted to not only the fans but all his future teammates what kind of teamate he is. This is the same guy who a couple of years back was talking about being the next Jordan. Good luck with that attitude.
He will never survive in New Jersey with those fans.

Carter didn't work hard. And this is news?

The NBA is a joke. Celebrations, high-fives, acknowledgements after every point. Come'on guys, it's not soccer or hockey, where scoring 20 goals in a season is above average. The average NBA player can rest on their laurels once they are drafted, too bad. The average NBA player doesn't improve their field goal or foul shooting percentage, why even practise.

I agree 100%. The NBA is interesting for what goes on off the court, not on the court. That part's boring.

To quote Iverson, "Practice? You talkin' about missing PRACTICE?"

Just read my issue of S.I.

This was hardly surprising to me either. McGrady has a knack for disappearing at times during the game. He is an offensive juggernaut because he's blessed with a ton of talent....but this guy thinks that if the play's not called for him then he can just sit this one out. His rebound totals are miniscule for his potential, and we hardly have to get into his defense....WHAT A SLEEPER!
