do you guys think athletes ever take money to go down? I don't mean lose the game as much as I do intentionally not cover the spread. the reason I ask is I just lost my pro-line ticket because the chiefs allowed a last play of the game touchdown which let the chargers cover the spread and I'm bitter about it (one play cost me 225 bucks). so, do you think this was intentional or are they just bastards?

Gram, you've watched enough football to know that kind of thing happens on a regular basis. A team like the Chiefs only care if they win or lose, not by how much. They're ahead by more than a touchdown, so it doesn't matter to them if they give up a last play score. They're basically letting the clock run out while they're on defence and go into the locker room with a W.

BTW, I had the Chargers.

In the very long run, a tie-breaker is points scored in the Division, so the Chargers had the impetus to score, even though it was the last play. The Chiefs could care less.

Pro Sports fixed? Nah *cough*boxing*cough*

Hehe... I really wonder if MJ did bet on his own games? A few years ago, I saw Sam Smith (Chicago sports columnist) on TV and he said he believed the league actually asked MJ in '93 to retire or be suspended for gambling.. This was when he was blowing millions on weekend gambling binges in Vegas.

In a word yes

So often the sperd is not covered in a win, when it could be easily.

Did PR ever bet on the REDS???/
Come on you think he did not?

The temptation is too great not to manipulate points................Unless you believe college scandles teach these folks a lesson.

Dunno 'bout today, but remember films such as Eight Men Out and Field of Dreams, both about the disgraced "Black Sox"of... hrm... 1919??

Eight men on one team throw the World Series for payola. True story.

Unfortunately, yes. Where there is money involved (especially large amounts), there is bound to be corruption. Human nature.

It's a proven fact that most people will cheat if they think they will get away with it. It's a matter of degree, and who they think they are cheating (and / or stealing from).

It is actually quite common knowledge in racing as well ie NASCAR and CART that there are fixes in from organization side. They try and create the impression of a run for the Championship.

In NASCAR the "CALL" is made to a team and they are basically allowed to do whatever they want to their engine to make it easy for them to get by the field. Now there is no guarantee the engine will hold together for 500 miles but they will have the "Strong Car" for that weekend.

In CART they have been known to penalize a driver (black flag) if they don't want them to win. Robby Gordon in his rookie year was leading three different races and never finished on the lead lap of any of them. Reason pitspeed violations or blendline violations, all non appealable. HMMMMMM
