Patrisse Khan-Cullors Buys Topanga Canyon Home – DIRT

A secluded mini-compound tucked into L.A.’s rustic and semi-remote Topanga Canyon was recently sold for a tad more than $1.4 million to a corporate entity that public records show is controlled by Patrisse Khan-Cullors, 37-year-old social justice visionary and co-founder of the galvanizing and, for some, controversial Black Lives Matter movement.

Kahn-Cullors, a UCLA and USC graduate married about five years ago to social activist (and amateur boxer) Janaya Khan, co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto, created the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag in 2013 in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin. Since then, the largely decentralized movement has been at the influential forefront on issues of police brutality and racially motivated violence against Black people, particularly in the wake of George Floyd’s killing last summer that sparked massive protests across the United States and around the globe. Kahn-Cullors’ published “When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir” in 2018.

A winding 15 minute drive from The Commons at Calabasas and a slightly longer and somewat less serpentine drive from Malibu’s Getty Villa, the pint-sized compound spans about one-quarter of an acre. The property’s not-quite 2,400 square feet is divided between the a three-bedroom and two-bath main house and a separate one-bed/one-bath apartment capable of hosting guests long term with a private entry and a living room with kitchenette.

Interior spaces feature bamboo floors and, in the spacious open-plan living room, dining area and kitchen, vaulted ceilings clad in knotty pine. A whitewashed raised hearth brick fireplace anchors the living room and numerous skylights baths the cavernous space with natural light.

The two guest bedrooms and hall bathroom are fairly ordinary, as is the simple and up-to-date though not especially high-end kitchen, while the primary bedroom offers a vaulted and wood-clad ceiling plus a small sitting area with glass sliders to the backyard.

An un-landscaped dust bowl with little charm besides the natural beauty of the trees and rugged mountains that envelope the property, the backyard offers little more than a covered patio for alfresco dining, a small deck and a tiny freestanding cabin best suited as a home office, meditation retreat or art studio.

The listing was managed by Stefanie Becker at Coldwell Banker Realty and the buyer by Nina Kurtz at Compass.

Nothing to see here, it's pretty normal. Even most radicals have to grow up some day. The staunch communists of the Eastern Block, almost overnight, became "social democrats" and went into business with the same gusto they embrace communism, before. The big problem are those who attempt both- become fat cats while still clinging and promoting their sick ideology...for the rest of us while, themselves, doing the opposite.

Wow. So I guess black lives don't really matter after all.
Sure they matter. You just can't purchase a nice property with them; or can you?

I don't remember which one but one of the ANC guys said:

Organizations still pay their workers....especially the owner of the organization.

Are you saying that right winged organizations arent con artists....? Because I have news for you.

Why is it so bad that a Black woman bought herself a modest house? Do you really hate Black people that much???????
But it's the left wingers in politics who claim, like our dear PM, to be beyond this type of corruption and thus are on top of the moral summit.

BLM got 90 million dollars in donations and most local chapters got little or nothing.

Black Lives Matter received over $90M in donations last year (nypost.com)

don't you think something is odd about that?

BLM founder branded a 'fraud' for blowing millions on property empire including $1.4m home in mostly white neighborhood (the-sun.com)

A BLACK Lives Matter co-founder has been branded a "fraud" for buying a $1.4m home in a largely white district of LA.

Patrisse Cullors, 37, who calls herself a "trained Marxist" and "freedom fighter", bought the three-bathroom house in Topanga Canyon which comes complete with a guest house.

The expensive property has a large back yard which the realtor says is "ideal for entertaining or quietly contemplating cross-canyon vistas framed by mature trees."

According to the Associated Press, BLM took in $90m donations in 2020.

It is unclear if or how Cullors, who is an artist and teaches at a university, is paid by the activist group she co-founded.

Black Lives Matter didn't respond to The Sun's immediate request for comment.

In her new area, 88 per cent of locals are white while 1.8 per cent are back, according to the census, reports the Daily Mail.

The property is located 20 miles from her childhood home in Van Nuys which she previously described as being in an "impoverished neighborhood."

In her 2018 memoir, Cullors said she was raised by a single mother and lived in a "two-story, tan-colored building where the paint was peeling and where there is a gate that does not close properly and an intercom system that never works."

Twitter users have questioned why the activist chose to buy a luxury property in a white neighborhood.

One account called Cullors a "fraud", tweeting: "Well at least it should finally be clear to everyone what a fraud Patriss Khan-Cullors is."

The same user also branded her a "#RaceHuckster."

The BLM co-founder was also criticised by other left-leaning activists.

Vallejo for Racial Justice posted: "We're talking generational wealth off of the deaths & struggle of Black folks here.

"Justice Teams Network & BLM founder paid $1.4 million dollars for a home.

"This past week we bought a cot for our unhoused Black elder friend to keep him off the ground."

One LGBT account called BLM "a racket."

Right-leaning activist Andy Ngo tweeted: "Cullors identifies as a communist & advocates for the abolishment of capitalism."

The Topanga Canyon homestead is one of three properties that Cullors owns in Los Angeles, according to public records viewed by the New York Post.

In 2020, Cullors and her spouse Janaya Khan purchased a fourth home in Georgia, Atlanta. The $415,000 property spans 3.2 rural acres in Conyers that includes a studio apartment with a private airplane hangar located underneath it.

In 2016, she bought a three-bedroom house in Inglewood for $510,000 which is now worth around $80,000.

She was also looking at properties in a resort located in the Bahamas where golf legend Tiger Woods and pop star Justin Timberlake resided, according to the New York Post.

Cullors founded Black Lives Matter with Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch coordinator who killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

However, last year, the co-founders left the group leaving Cullors to assume control of the BLM Global Network - which oversees local chapters

Yet, local organisers told Politico last October that they received little to no money from BLM and were forced to crowdfund to stay afloat.

Cullors works as a professor of Social and Environmental Arts at Prescott College in Arizona and last October signed a deal with TV and movie studio Warner Bros.

The contract states that the activist will develop and produce original programming for the entertainment giant.

I don't understand why its such a big deal that she bought a house. We all exist in a capitalist world, even if we dont agree with capitalism.
What do you expect she do with her earnings from being a professor? She probably makes 6 figures from that.....so why wouldnt she buy a house?
LOL. Of course it is not a big deal but the racists on this board and elsewhere need some way to discredit the movement. and its legitimate goals.

It doesn't add up, $1.4 million is a pauper's payment for anything in the Costal Hills, Kobe Bryant died nearby. Topanga Canyon is located between Inceville in the east (where J Paul Getty lived) and Malibu in the west, those are not areas that a common schlepper can afford. Now if the story said 11 million, I'd believe it.

Fake News.
