Their dog was found alongside them, gotta be gas leak or perhaps suicides by gas.

Not sure about real life with dogs at night. They like the smell of poop when it comes to other dogs and animals. Whereas a cat wants to cover it up with litter.
Of course, many fatal gases have little or no smell with better technology now.
