If I were the Jays' GM, I would look for a deal where another team assumed the balance of George Springer's contract, even if it means trading one or more controllable assets as part of the trade. In the off season, I'd look to sign one or more blue chip free agents to 2-3 year deals where the third year is a club or player option, with minimal buyout if the club declines the option year. These might even be injured pitchers who are expected to be healthy after the 2025 All Star break.
I don't see the Jays contending in 2025, so these free agents would be acquired specifically for the purpose of trading them on or before the 2025 deadline for top prospects who are 1-2 years away from regular Major League service.
If the Jays continue their recent strategy of trying to compete for a Wild Card playoff spot, then hoping for a miracle, I think they will be a second division club for at least five more years, and probably longer.
Springer has a proven track record in the post season, and two more years guaranteed at $24.17 Million. His presence on the team will be detrimental to the 2025 and 2026 teams, specifically because of his cost. If they can't move him today, their chances of doing so before July, 2026 are slim to none.
There's a short list of teams who don't care about the luxury tax penalty. If Toronto can pawn off George to one of those clubs, there is some hope for this team within 2-3 years, otherwise it looks like 70-80 win seasons will be optimistic for at least the next five years.
