MarcheWas Richtree the place where you would go in, they hall different stations, you would grab a plate from the station and they would make if for you right out in the open?
In the immediate downtown core, it was Alfred's F and C for me in the 80's on east side of Yonge just south of Bloor. The city hasn’t been the same since Penrose Fish and Chips closed down after 50+ years.
My Mom used to smash a bunch of chips and do a shake and bake style chicken(with skin). YummyI like this place in Kensington Market. Try to fish and battered in Miss Vickies potato chips. (An idea I came up with decades ago using salt and vinegar ridged chips (like Ruffles but from Presidents Choice!!)

I'm going to try that! What did she use to stick the chip dust to the chicken? My Mom used to smash a bunch of chips and do a shake and bake style chicken(with skin). Yummy
Nothing. The moist chicken skin was enough for the chip crumbs to stick.I'm going to try that! What did she use to stick the chip dust to the chicken?
Try Wanda's Pie in the Sky bakery in Kensiington.Definitely intrigued by the fish and chips and burger places.
I've got a bit of a sweet tooth and I've heard nothing but good things about Craig's Cookies.
I like the cream pies: coconut and banana. Better than sex !Try Wanda's Pie in the Sky bakery in Kensiington.
Indeed, they are the best.I like the cream pies: coconut and banana. Better than sex !
Went to New Toronto many times. Long Branch Fish and Chips was also quite good, but it closed a while ago. There is a chain place called Halibut House, which is decent and they're all over the place. There is a fish and chips place on 5th Street in Etobicoke (New Toronto Fish and Chips) that still fires in beef tallow! NOTHING better to fry potatoes in! Definitely can taste and feel the difference!
McNies near Burnhamthorpe and Martin Grove was also quite good. Haven't been there in ages so who knows if it's still good. Naturally, there's a church nearby. This Etobicoke place is pretty solid too. Same owner for 30-40 years.
Perhaps you've heard of Henry's in the Georgian Bay area that's famous for its pickerel and you can only get there by boat or floatplane. There's also one in Midland as far as I can remember. My special recipe for a shore lunch of pickerel was to soak the fillets in canned condensed milk, then dip in cornstarch. Let the cornstarch firm up while you get your canned maple beans and canned potatoes (sliced and fried) ready. Then dip the fillets in an egg and little bit of condensed milk wash, then dredge in crushed ridged (like Ruffles-but it was PC Chips back then) Salt and Vinegar chips.
Then pan fry them in lard in a big stamped carbon steel campfire frying pan.
Fuck me, it was great!
All the other fishermen and/or guides had our own recipes. Some liked pancake batter mix with beer. Rocky Madsen was a real estate agent back then and came up with his own fish batter recipe that I think is still sold in stores.
Unspoken shore lunch rule was that everything in the shore lunch had to be canned or otherwise not needing refrigeration.
they sold. New owners raised prices and lowered quality. Not to be racist, but being racist… To be expected by the new owners. Money, money, money money money.McNies near Burnhamthorpe and Martin Grove was also quite good. Haven't been there in ages so who knows if it's still good. Naturally, there's a church nearby.
some some of the halibut house franchises are good, really good!Went to New Toronto many times. Long Branch Fish and Chips was also quite good, but it closed a while ago. There is a chain place called Halibut House, which is decent and they're all over the place.
of course!!! Many many many times. But, be honest, the past decade or so it’s been less than great. They have to bring their fish in from Lake Erie. And I find them product a bit greasy.Perhaps you've heard of Henry's in the Georgian Bay area that's famous for its pickerel and you can only get there by boat or floatplane. I thought the point of a chain is consistency. I guess notsome some of the halibut house franchises are good, really good!
Some not so much
