Having traveled extensively and tried to make a home in South America and southeast Asia I can honestly say when I came back to Canada I was much more appreciative of this shit hole as you call it

My aunt who was an executive for Esso retired to Costa Rica in 2018 because she was sick of winters in Montreal.
She stayed for 4 years but returned, she found frequent power outages during insufferable heat waves, frequently cutoff due to poor roads and mudslides blocking the roads during rainy season.
Since her Spanish wasn't perfect she was treted as a "gringo", so not too welcoming, add to that her $200.00 US per month healthcare plan since she wasn't Costa Rican.
She moved to Florida for 6 months from Costa Rica but didn't feel safe, in her words it is an open air nut house.
She has said in order to really appreciate what you have in Canada you have to leave for a while.
