SpaceX Fires Employees Who Circulated Letter Calling Musk An "Embarrassment" And Seeking "Inclusiveness"

SpaceX reportedly does not take kindly to criticizing the man at the top, Elon Musk. The space exploration company reportedly fired several of its employees who "helped write and distribute an open letter criticizing the behavior of CEO Elon Musk," according to Bloomberg.

The letter was circulated with the point of calling on executives to make the company's work culture "more inclusive". "At least five employees" were fired, Reuters added, with the news being confirmed by SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell.

Shotwell said in an email this week that the company had investigated and "terminated a number of employees involved" in writing and circulating the critical letter.

And if this isn't the ultimate 'inclusiveness' irony...Shotwell told other employees that the letter had actually made other staff feel "uncomfortable, intimidated and bullied, and/or angry because the letter pressured them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views."

The letter made several demands, including: "SpaceX must swiftly and explicitly separate itself from Elon's personal brand. Hold all leadership equally accountable to making SpaceX a great place to work for everyone" and "define and uniformly respond to all forms of unacceptable behavior."

To which SpaceX replied with a swift no, which came in the form of terminations.

The original letter had called Musk a "distraction and embarrassment" to the company he helped start up. And so, numerous hysterical lefties likely learned an important lesson today: there is no freedom of speech when you're working for a private company and biting the hand that provides your job, benefits and paycheck isn't always the greatest move...

Hmmm. That is fair. Don’t bite the hand that feeds…. Even if it is Musk.

Once again we see cancel culture in action.
As people have told me in other threads, these employees HAD to be kept on because firing someone for their views is the worst thing ever and close to totalitarianism.

If you’re unhappy with your workplace then just leave. No one has the right to dictate to the owner of the business.
I've been told repeatedly in these very forums that this isn't the case.
No employee can ever be fired for saying something.
It's cancel culture.

It depends, If you're making a political statement, you should be fine. If you talk shit about your boss and the owner of the company that's quite different.

Yes and no, don't ever tell your office mates that you voted conservatives or the lefties will cancel you.

Personal attacks on the boss/owner is not recommended.

But it was a political statement.
Just like a lot of the other examples of cancel culture where someone criticized the working environment and management of a company.

Am I to believe everyone has changed their mind now and thinks that firing someone who criticizes their company isn't cancel culture?

I don't see it as political. It was a personal attack on the owner and boss calling him an embarrassment. If they would have talked about Space X and it's policies that's different, Then I would consider that cancel culture

You can fire anyone for absolutely any reason you like.

You could just decide you didn't like the guy's face and fire him. You just need to obey the law with respect to severance and that's it. End of story.

They asked for policy changes from HR and equal enforcement of some of them, according to the article.
So basically they said that the internal culture at SpaceX was being affected by Musk's public behavior and that the board should take steps to handle that internally and make sure that HR policies were being applied uniformly.

You can fire anyone for absolutely any reason you like.

You need to tell that to people on this board.
They are convinced that it is cancel culture if anyone gets fired (provided that person was someone they agreed with, of course).

Calling your boss an embarrassment and demanding the company separate from his brand isn't a great tactic for remaining employed.
As far as I can tell, they didn't explicitly say what they meant my "inclusiveness", so can't comment on that. Though I suspect this is again a shot at Musk.

Sounds like they crossed the line and made it a personal attack on Musk. And made it pretty available and open.

Sounds like they got fired for cause with no recourse. If it was just an ill-thought-out political rant that was intended to help build the corporate culture, I'd have a lot more sympathy.

Problem is they were correct. Musk is an embarrassment. He has a voice because he is richest guy on earth. But yet he’s a moron.

He's an idiot in some ways, but I wouldn't classify him overall as a moron. He's a self-made billionaire. You may disagree with his beliefs and his antics, but it's hardly appropriate to call him a moron.
But the moral of the story: don't bite the hand that feeds you. Commenting on political or ideological topics is fine, but the moment you bring your own boss into it...I don't know what they were expecting.

I agree with you on the fact that he is a very successful business guy. Yet I am pretty sure he is high level moron guy just like Steve Jobs was. Musk should temper down his ego and stop thinking he is god. Heck his own child wants to dissociate from him:

Musk is complicated. He is both a visionary genius, and a spoiled little twat who throws tantrums when he wants to get his way.
