Yes, in their arrogance, they didn't plan properly for a longer campaign. But I imagine they're rectifying that. They have a lot of resources to back them up, so as incompetent as they've been to date, they'll likely figure it out in the long run.
I don't know if it was over confidence. From my understanding, they don't have the logistical ability to ship as much materials as needed to troops once they got 30km past the railheads near the border. Not enough trucks to carry food, fuel or ammo, which is why their advances peter out after a certain distance. The US military, for example, has a significantly larger logistical footprint. They have a bunch more trucks and what not, and can send them in mass to sustain an offensive.
I think it is one of those things where the US has a professional military that has little corruption. There is little pilfering of materials by supply officials, and they have done enough war games to plan for and understand how much they need to support the front line troops.
Now, if Russia were to be invaded, they would be well supplied as they retreated along the railway lines. They could be re-supplied all the time.

I know many Ukrainians. They are all united in thinking the country should fight the invaders. The loss of civilians and others is horrific. But the fault is all on Russia. RT and the other propaganda units are trying to make it seem like Russia had no choice, like they were forced into invading. All of it is bullshit. And you constantly push their messaging. Russia is a bully that thought it could steal the lunch money from the quiet kid who knows how knew some martial arts and fought back. NATO, no matter how much Putin tries to sell it, is not an offensive threat to Russia. However, it makes it harder for him to fuck around with the other former soviet republics in the neighbourhood. Putin wants to pretend Russia is still a super power. That sun has set a while ago. It doesn't have the economic might to fund a military, nor, apparently, the leadership to conduct a quick and successful invasion. They have nukes, but one must question at what level of readiness are they actually at?
You are not wrong. I mean, the allies paused after the crushed the German army in France. Instead of moving on through the Netherlands, the regrouped and rested for a few weeks. However, Germany took no further offensive action until mid December in the disastrous Battle of the Bulge. Yes, it took ground for a few weeks, but it got beaten back and was firmly on the defensive.
I am not saying Russia won't continue fighting. They will. They will likely launch another offensive in a few days. But they will continue to face the logistical issues they have right now. They are going to see a shortage of men and material as well as armour.
They usually don't involve complete evacuation of the combat area with abandoned fighting vehicles though. So this one's "special".

At best, Putin's military advisors convinced him and themselves that they could overrun Ukraine in a couple days. The other part is how much military supplies were sold on the black market by their commanders (and yes, there is plenty of documentation of this happening of the past 3 decades).
They have told former soldiers that they are being reactivated and they will need 12 weeks of re-training so either Russia expects the war in Ukraine to go on for months or they have an extremely paranoid belief that NATO is actually planning to invade Russia.
