In my line of work, I have come across hundreds , if not thousands of people, who declare very little income to Revenue Canada but they live in million dollar homes and own multiple properties. Obviously they earn more money than what they declare. And with this current pandemic, I have seen many who have asked for payment relief and are receiving various government benefits (CERB and emergency benefit payments). Individuals from all walks of life have been affected by COVID19 This is a review board about sex providers so the comment made is relevant but don’t think for a second that they are the only ones who avoid paying taxes. If they do declare income, they deserve benefits like everyone else and the same goes for if they don’t declare their income

If a person is on social assistance how can they be eligible for CERB? The CRA would just deny them their claim.
The government knew there was increased risk of fraud with the CERB program, but decided to get the money out faster. The CRA even admits that people are getting the benefit even if they don't qualify. So it seems they have not been denying CERB claims as you might think.

.

Even in a fictitious scenario, I cannot agree with a person that does not to declare income (regardless of how much) while on social assistance and has the audacity to complain that they are not eligible for CERB. I am not suggesting that any or even all sex workers are doing this, but the principle remains the same.

If they received social assistance before the pandemic why do they need the CERB & social assistance at the same time?

But Jagmeet Singh said it is perfectly fine to cheat CERB if you need the money.

There are individuals who are on social assistance who work {not under the table ) and file a tax return and if they lost their job due to the pandemic they are eligible for CERB, but it is case by case. "Social assistance" is generally a provincial program, OW and ODSP in Ontario (each province and territory has an equivalent ) and CERB is a separate federal program .

I know a single mother with two children and she earns a low income from a full time job that was shut down over the past few months. She is receiving her normal social assistance from the Ontario Government (Ontario Child Benefit that she receives because she is considered low income) and she is receiving a CERB benefit. Based upon her current situation she does not need the $2,000 month X 3 months as she has a lot of savings but she pays her taxes and the Government has offered the benefit to Canadians. Why wouldn’t she apply to receive it.

She is entitled to the CERB benefit since her company closed its doors because of the pandemic and she claimed income with Revenue Canada of over $25,000.

1) No matter how much money you have stashed away or how much you earn, if you are entitled to any government payment - you should get them.
2) If you do not declare all your income - you are breaking the law.

That's how it works. If you're already getting EI then you won't get CERB. If however your EI doesn't amount to as much as you would get from CERB, they will top up your EI to match. This all gets explained when you apply for CERB. First thing they ask you is if you are eligible for EI.

In other words, you're brother should be receiving the same amount ($2000 a month) through EI as someone who is getting it through CERB.
