Brazil: Woman Wearing #NotHim T-Shirt Attacked by Bolsonaro Supporters, Swastika Carved Into Skin

Published 10 October 2018

After physically assaulting her, one of the attackers took out a pocket knife and carved a sign, similar to a swastika, into her stomach.

A 19-year-old woman wearing a #NotHim, or #EleNão, T-shirt has been attacked by a group of men claiming to support far-right-wing presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro in the Baronesa do Gravataí, Cidade Baixa neighborhood in Porto Alegre Monday.

The victim, who has refused to comment publicly on the attack fearing further attackes, told the Civil Police she was disembarking a bus and about to walk home when she was approached by the group of attackers.

After physically assaulting her, one of the attackers, she said, took out a pocket knife and carved a sign, similar to a swastika, into her stomach. The swastika is well known around the world to be associated with the Nazi regime of the 1930s and 1940s and is associated with ideas of racism and anti-semitism.

Hundreds of thousands gathered in different cities across Brazil over the last few weeks to protest against Bolsonaro, who represents the Social Liberal Party (PSL). The movement was led by feminists opposing the candidate's sexism, racism, and homophobia and has been supported by leftist organizations.

The marches follow social media unrest, as Bolsonaro's remarks have shown little empathy towards gender equality.

In a series of marches stretching from Manaus in the Amazon to the megacity of Sao Paulo in the nation's southeast, demonstrators used the #EleNao, or #NotHim, hashtag pledging that voters will not to vote for the candidate who has made light of rape and called the gender pay gap justified.

Demonstrators in 52 cities around the world, across 24 countries, will also show solidarity with Brazilians for the "#EleNão" (#NotHim) protests. According to the Facebook account of "Women United Against Bolsonaro," which now has over two million followers, the demonstrations are nonpartisan.

The international rallies are also organized through the "Brazilian Women Abroad Against Bolsonaro" Facebook account and will incorporate the #EleNão hashtag and "No to Fascism" slogan for social media use.

Interesting picture. Her assailant "carved" the swastika rather carefully and lightly into her skin, really just scratching the surface such that there would be no lasting scars. Why would a thug do this so delicately? Something not quite right about this. Must be more to this story.

It is official that these far right supporters are going on some violent attacks. Especially as Bolsonaro has stated that he has no control over these mobs, but wants them to stop it.
In other words this is a factual attack on this lady!!

Hey Beaver, have you ever been attacked with a knife? Have you ever spoken with a forensic expert about knife attacks and knife wounds? This is not what a knife attack looks like. It took a while to make so many scratch lines. The story doesn't talk about her been held down or restrained. Something missing here.

Hey Plugged, you always come up with conspiracy theories in defence of every single far right attacks. Really a lot of presumptions in your so call "evidence".
Maybe even this article is false when it also lists the murder of a supporter of Bolsonaro:

Beaver, one day you may learn how to use the term "conspiracy theory" correctly in a sentence, but that day isn't today.

I've raised nothing more than the point that the picture put forward as evidence of a knife attack doesn't look right. It doesn't look consistent with the story (as reported). Think of it this way. Imagine someone offered you a banana. You say yes, and then they hand you a piece of fruit that is bright red, round in shape, and has a stem. At that moment, you might think that something doesn't seem right, assuming you know what a banana is supposed to look like.

Now, if you don't know what a knife wound, rather than a scratch made by a knife point, looks like, you'd be in the same position as someone who had never seen a banana in their life. But this has nothing to do with conspiracies, or theories. It has everything to do with the ability to analyze evidence.

I didn't read your other story, because you are missing the point, which is whether this particular attack occurred exactly as reported.

p.s. Reporters are particularly bad at asking questions about things that don't look right - if the story is what they would like to be true. That's why reporting is no substitute for actual fact finding.

I take it you intend us to believe you know every single Brazilian thug personally? Otherwise it's impossible to take such a vastly silly. over-generalization seriously.

Or did I miss your subtle humour?

I suppose it might be theoretically possible that a thug with an uncharacteristic degree of self control over his knife, but not his temper, would happen upon a young women getting off a bus who had a t-shirt he vehemently disagreed with, and then painstakingly and delicately etch out (carefully avoiding any deep incisions) a poorly drawn swastika on her belly, without the suggestion that anyone else held her tightly in place while he carried out his surgically precise task (on the belly, no less, a hard area to stabilize). Just not very likely. Not a story I'm inclined to accept at face value without a lot more supporting facts.

And I don't even have to know much about thugs (except that they are usually hotheads with little self control) so much as I need to know about knife wounds, which I do.

Unless she was wearing a thick sweater or a jacket, Bud? You think of that explanation?

And now you defend the attack on a woman by some nazi wannabes? Damn your moral compass is fucked.

p.s. With a sharp knife, the difference between scratching someone and cutting their guts open isn't much. Perhaps the scummy assaulter just didn't want to commit murder.

No, I didn't think of that explanation, for at least 2 reasons:

1. It's not what she said happened. She said that the guy saw her t-shirt and was offended by it. You've got to start reading the articles that you comment on!

2. It makes no sense. You don't "draw a picture" through clothing. You can't see what you're drawing. Quite obviously, whoever scratched the swastika on her did it directly on her skin.

No, I'm not "defending" anyone or any attack. I'm questioning her story (or, more accurately, the picture the press is circulating). There might be no one to defend!

p.s. You're so close to getting the point (pun intended) here. You're right - you have to be pretty careful with a knife to avoid piercing the skin when you're using it on someone's stomach (especially if they are struggling/resisting). Get it now?

She was wearing the sweater under the t-shirt?? And a swastika isn't a complicated item to draw. You make a cross. You add squiggly bits at the tips. It's not like anyone was drawing an Aubrey Beardsley reproduction here, is it?

In fact, now that I look at it, that would explain how crude the drawing is. The assailant couldn't see what exactly he was drawing.

I'll put your theory against mine any time to a vote of reasonable jurors. Do you know anyone who wears a t-shirt over a sweater, particularly in mid 80's F weather? I'd enjoy the demonstration to the jury how you can draw a swastika without being able to see what you're drawing! The "artist" managed to connect all the lines at the correct angles, presumably while she struggled/resisted.

Plugged, It is hilarious to listen to you trying to judge my use of the "Conspiracy Theory" phrase, especially when you have been passionately trying to defend first James Fields in the murder of Heather Heyer and now the far right mobs and their extreme violence in Brazil.

You act like you are an investigator that is trying to reveal the "bias' or "lies" in the media reports or victims respectively, as is in this case. I can see why you did not conveniently read the link that I also posted. It confirms this incident.

Wonder where you go looking for your "fact finding" sources? Why would all the Main Stream media report it, if it was that simplistic as you seem to portray this incident to be?? Are they getting suckered in by such stories as you allegedly claim that they did in the Heather Heyer killing??

Right. You just happen to appear any time a racist is accused of a crime trying to deny that a crime occurred.

The saddest part is than no matter who is involved, whether it is the DA in Charlottesville or some random Brazilian woman, you always create conspiracy theories to excuse racists.

Um. While I will accept her story at face value this just makes you look dumb.

A sweater under a t shirt in +80 degree weather? Seriously?

Who does that?

C'mon oagre, you can do better than that!
