Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper Condemned for Congratulating Far-Right Authoritarian Leader

Former Canadian Prime Minister is roundly criticized after tweeting his best wishes to the autocratic leader of Hungary

April 10, 2018

Former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper has been roundly condemned after extending his congratulations to Hungary’s anti-democratic, far-right leader following his recent election victory, thanks in part to rewriting the constitution and gerrymandering.

Viktor Orbán, leader of Hungary’s far-right Fidesz party, captured a parliamentary supermajority following a largely unfair election that stirred anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim paranoia pushed by the country’s media, largely controlled by Orbán’s allies.

As the New York Times recently explained, Orbán has worked to transform Hungary into a “soft autocracy” in recent years:

“Hungary is now considered a democracy in sharp, worrisome decline.

Through legislative fiat and force of will, Mr. Orban has transformed the country into a political greenhouse for an odd kind of soft autocracy, combining crony capitalism and far-right rhetoric with a single-party political culture.”

On Tuesday, Orban pledged as his first act, he will move to crack down on charities and NGOs that help refugees.

Despite Orbán’s anti-democratic measures and divisive scapegoating of minority groups, Harper logged on to Twitter Monday to extend his “congratulations” to the autocrat:

Harper added that “the IDU and I are looking forward to working with you.”

The Conservative Party of Canada, along with Hungary’s Fidesz, are both members of the “International Democrat Union” — a global organization of right-wing political parties that also includes the US Republican Party.

Harper currently serves as Chairman of the global conservative organization, with sitting MP Tony Clement as his deputy.

Following Harper’s tweet congratulating Orbán, many Twitter users chimed in to remind the former Prime Minister he’s celebrating an autocrat:

Good for him. Orban is a patriot who actually cares about his country and the people he leads.

I trust the pope more than that Far Right Anti-Semite Racist leader called Orban:

Hungary is a Catholic nation and yes the Pope has a right to condemn anti-Christian values. Hats off to the Pope. Not very long ago the Hungarians were fighting a man called Hitler who has similar values to Orban who is moving in that direction.

Harper as usual displays his true colours, as he continues to align now with the extreme right wing. Wonder whether he has the gall to condemn Orban for his anti-semite stance. Not really!!

Orban is democratically elected leader. what makes him authoritarian?
Answer: What he does with the office he's been re-elected to. His record so far is grounds for pessimism.

84% of Hungarians voted to join the EU, and no doubt they have benefited hugely from it. Electing this idiot is contrary to the wishes of that majority!!

That was back in 2003 before the migrant crisis. Hungary and Poland and the other Visegrad group countries are not suffering from Islamic terror attacks like France, Belgium and Germany

That guy in your signature picture will probably get this treatment thanks to Orban:

All the same it does not reflect our Canadian values and obviously Harper is clueless as to it.

We don't have values, we're a timid bunch of kittens. That's what you get when you're given a country instead of struggling for it. Sadly, our current Prime Minister agrees with me.

I guess that the POTUS who says that if he had a gun he would "shoot him" is the sort of values that his Cult Followers would agree with!!
Yes, that is leading to masses of shootings whether it is Las Vegas or the numerous schools in the USA. So building a wall is what makes a country.
No wonder Canadians feel far more relaxed here in Canada than in the USA, where they have to worry about "no go areas". That is what you may describe as a "timid bunch of kittens", then I will go with it.
Anyway, it is a false concept that you are handed a country. The large majority of Canadians have worked hard and contributed to the economy.

The build up of xenophobia has nothing to do with the numerous racist and anti-semite remarks by the re-elected extremist Government?? Really!!
I guess the Jamaican visa link has all the relevance. Hahaha!! You should have your own comedy show.

We all worked hard to make our countries comfortable and prosperous. There's nothing special in doing your duty and due diligence for your family and your neighbors. That's quite different from struggling to establish (or reestablish) nationhood in the face of fierce opposition. Canada just never got to experience that collective history. Never forget what Johnny A said: "A British subject I was born and a British subject I will die".
