Most cops are great, honest, hardworking folks BUT there are some who arent. A buddy is a cop....he told me that those in drug enforcement are the highest paid. i.e. $200K in cash found, $100K is reported. The difference is distributed with a strict code of silence. Are the perps going to say "we had more drug money than reported"?....
Not saying this happens EVERY time....but dont kid yourselves....it happens.
To stay on topic, people are arguing that TO cops should be the highest paid due to cost of living. It would be interesting to see how many DONT live in TO. I know 3 city cops personally and they all live in Durham. Now before someone says "why arent cops allowed to commute when others obviously do?"....I'm just saying people will naturally gravitate to affordable housing and CHOOSE to work where they do/can....
No one in their right mind thinks all cops are arrow straight, but it's certainly not as some on here would like you to believe. As far as you friend is concerned, apparently the code of silence has tiny rips in it. To basically say that Toronto drug cops, read all, regularly take half of the drug money they cease is just a hollywood fantasy and beer talk, setting aside John Schertzer, Steven Correia, Ned Maodus, Joseph Miched and Raymond Pollard.

I guess you need to spend some time dealing with officials in a poor corrupted country to understand the absurdity of that proposition.
You think a corrupt person will stop being corrupt if they are paid 25 percent more?

Or do you think the city can pay more money to a cop than the total available pool of cash for bribery in the city?

If you were re examine the corruption index and compare that to any index that compares average/comparible incomes, you would be surprise how most of the countries that rank low the corruption, have low corruption, are also countries where police are well paid,

Its not do much the pay as it is the culture and lack of checks and balances. You would be surprised how well off the politicians in those nations are yet still are corrupt always seeking more.

No one watches the politicians as well as the police are watched.

Well said and absolutely true, I know worst stories than taking money. This is not the place to talk about those stories, of course the white knights here will cry otherwise.

No one is saying it doesn't happen, but certainly not to extent that some might want you to believe. I have lived and worked in a police state and the cops here aren't anyway near what goes on in many many other countries.

A corrupt politician can make in one year enough to retire. Not the case with cops.
