CP 24 just annouced Kessel signed for 8 more years (but don't believe everything you hear and see on TV).
Yes, agree !
That said it does seem to be a case of the smoke/fire thing. I think we can book it.

From the TSN piece.

The Leafs did not start intense negotiations with Kessel until they heard from the winger that he was committed to staying in Toronto long term, according to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun. Leafs general manager Dave Nonis put great importance on Kessel's commitment to the team and waited to hear that from the 25-year-old before working on the extension. The two had a one-on-one meeting last week where Kessel gave Nonis the assurances he sought.

Kessel signs, 64 million over 8 years. I guess someone like his game. Street party at 3;00pm in Montreal.

Let's hope he will take his game to the next level. Like going to the 'dirty' area more often during games. Every athlete will be overpaid no matter which sports he plays. The hope here is that Kessel somehow with his skills will propel the Leafs into the playoffs every year he plays for the Maple Leafs. At the end we all will pay for his salary because the Leafs always increase tickets prices.

Why would 'going into the dirty area' raise his game? Gretzky was not known for that and he is consider one of the best who ever laced up skates, likewise Lemieux. Kessel is paid to score goals and help others on his line do the same, not for his body checking, and fighting skills.

I do not know about you, but I DO NOT pay for his salary in anyway. All I can do is cheering the Leafs, hoping they will provide the heart-stopping fun like they had last year, not the heart-breaking before that. Seems like this management team and this roster has some chance this year, I love EVERY moves that they had made so far, GO LEAFS GO!

He has been known to stay on top of the circle most times. You may not follow the games long enough but lots of ppl complaining that he should be in front of the crease or around the dirty area (not the corners!), or be unpredictable so that the opposition would find more difficult to defend him.

Kessel for 8 years? I like it... I think we've missed out signing elite players in the past because guys simply don't want to play in Toronto. I like the moves they've made and the current lineup.

GO LEAFS GO!!!

he would much rather play in the States and the fact he won't even say whether he would consider staying speaks volumes.
Are you still hearing those voices in your head?

Gentlemen and Ladies....

Last year they finally lost me for the most part. I didn't even watch the playoffs.
I refuse to allow this team to emotionally engage me. 46 years of bad ownership finally took its toll.
Don't be lemmings, be critical. Vote with your feet.

If I see better money spent.....a final series...I may come back....till then I've got the baseball playoffs and a lot of tv series I can catch up on.

Don't be blind to the ownership greed..demand more....

What can I say, I'm quite surprised by the announcement. If he can grab $8 million a year for 8 years good for him. Will be interesting to see what kind of team they can put around him in the coming years.

If Kessel has any intentions of staying in Toronto he would be talking extension. It's his last year of his contract and it will be his first crack at being a free agent. The fact he won't talk contract till after the season means he wants to test the market, which is bad for the Leafs as other clubs will no doubt bid him up around $7 or $8 million a season, especially if he has a great year. I don't think the buds stand a chance of re signing him.
Do you still think you know what Phil Kessel is thinking?

His deal was worth $65 MM
I guess your opinion and deep insight into the hockey world has the value of dryer lint

I would say its a little higher than dryer lint lol. Then again It was Kessel who said just a few days ago he didn't want to talk contract during the season. But everybody has the right to change their mind right?

Saw a little feature on TV about "unbreakable" hockey sticks. The problem is that "unbreakable" sticks mean more broken bones when stick meets bone.
