So, I'm going on a trip to Germany and the person I'm visiting is a close friend who I haven't seen in a very long time. According to her, she hasn't been able to find any stores there that sell incense and incense holders (I think that's what they're called). I feel bad, because it's the only time she's ever asked me for anything...

All the stores that I've been told to check out are marijuana related stores, like The Friendly Stranger, and that's really not what I'm going for. I'm looking for something more... Classy, I guess you could say...

I'd really appreciate any tips at all.

By incense do you mean those thin sticks you burn and they smell good? They have that in any Chinese mall but those are more to worship kinda things (and it doesn't smell very good). For leisure purpose then you're talking about those from the Japanese. Try Japan town around Steeles and 404. They might have some.

I remember visiting Japan and bought a bunch at the Matsukoshi in Ginza for my friends. Man they have the whole floor for that.

Yup, those are the ones I'm looking for. Never knew they were from Japan.

Really appreciate the tip.

I have over 1000 pieces of incense sitting beside me right now, bought from all over. Some in stick form, some cones.

If you get "Aromessence" from The Dollar Store, it's pretty good stuff, nice and thick and very aromatic. The following fragrances are my favourite: Patchouli, Black Magic, and Sandal Wood. They come 30 sticks in a package, and you get 2 packages for $1.

Now, if you want a good incense holder, then don't buy one at the Dollar Store. Go to a mall and find out of those shops that sells cool knick knacks, I can't think of any names right now. But they usually sell weird like this, little statues of angels and dragons, crap like that. You can find some pretty cool incense holders, like buddhas, dragons, or etc. I'm thinking maybe Pier One might sell them too, but I'm not sure.

Lots of places in Kensington Market.

I actually saw "Pussy" Incense in Essence of Life Health food store. Lol

I buy from a place on St Andrew just before Kensington.

Lots of this kind of stuff available online and I'm sure most places would ship to Germany.

Great selection online too.

Most 'head shops' sell perfectly good incense - the same stuff you get anywhere else. Not sure what 'classy' you're looking for...

kensington market/china town. :) Easy to find.

ALSO, there is a wide range of tibetan stores on queen street west... go for a walk on queen between dufferin and spadina when the weather is nice, a million artsy shops and quite the "characters" of toronto, but its fun to see the culture of toronto around here for sure. Anyway like I said a million tibetan stores -- they will have rocks, minerals, incense, candles, meditation bowls etc in the windows.

Dollar store will have them too like someone suggested, but they are bad quality incense.. the fumes that burn are potent and toxic. I still buy them, but it depends on the quality youre looking for. :)

don't buy any from Pacific Mall or dollar store... those are meant to be used for religious services, or smell horrible... I think your friend would be more interested in those used by yogis, meditative or health concious personalities, ones that come with a nice aroma that could be theraputic.. Try any of the 'Hippy' stores around Kensington Market or toronto.

I wouldn't recommend buying incense from the dollar store... It'll be dollar store quality and will smell like dollar store quality (aka awful lol). You may pay a bit more, but I would recommend going to Whole Foods or Noah's Natural Foods (there are a few locations throughout the city). Incense isn't super expensive so you may as well pay an extra dollar or two and get something that actually smells nice. They sell the holders at both places as well and will have a variety of scents from different makers.
Good advise. Or even better, buy a couple of small bottles of essential oil and a burner.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their tips.

After reading TTT4's post I did a quick Google search for Japanese Incense Toronto and found a place that had exactly what I was looking for within walking distance.

Thanks again.
