So tragic .. glad I got to see it in person. I'm sure they will rebuild but hopefully some of the treasures inside were saved.

And trump makes a fool of himself!!!

"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!"

LOL!!!

Actually, CNN just said French authorities had water-helicopters at their disposal, but they hesitated to use them because it might ruin the remaining structures.

Sorry to ruin your daily TDS though. My apologies

It is a bit surprising that the main building is burning. The towers are made of wood covered by lead, but I would have guessed that the main building was mainly stonework.

According to CBC, the area where the fire started was undergoing renovations and surrounded by scaffolding. This seems to make terrorism a remote possibility, so maybe the Islamaphobe contingent should chill out for the time being. Nobody will be able to pinpoint a cause till the fire is out...

Wow, jumping straight to Islamaphobia!
You are a man of action, aren't you?

Too bad that it looks like it was a reno/repair accident
Certainly you are right, radical muslims would never resort to this type of violence, only white nationalists would, right Frankie??

Yeah, not so fast. France has been plagued by anti-Catholic attacks in the last weeks:

And of course the latest one: https://www.thejournal.ie/france-ja...oiled-terror-attack-in-paris-4590216-Apr2019/

If the right wingnuts wants to hijack this thread to muslim terrorism, maybe the moderaters could be convinced to move it to the political forum. Please.

What happens to the lead when it's heated? It flows down the structure spreading fire on to anything flammable. For fire protection, lead is one of the worst roof covering you can have.

I was there, it's an awesome site. It looks to me like the fire was started by construction dust, that can be a real problem within an ancient edifice. Notre Dame was begun by Phillip Augustus in 1185 and completed in 1345. Phillip Augustus is considered the first true French King, he fought continuous wars against the Plantagenet Kings of England and the Holy Roman Emperor to secure his territory. He chose the site of Notre Dame on the location of the first Roman settlement.

Truly heartbreaking!

Nobody injured fortunately.

Who cares about a building.
Just bricks and mortar.
Can be rebuilt if they wanna spend their money.
