The Big Sky Conference named University of Montana runner June Eastwood, a biological male who identifies as a transgender woman, the cross-country female athlete of the week.

“June Eastwood finished second in a field of 204 runners at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational,” helping “Montana place seventh as a team,” the conference noted in its announcement Tuesday. Eastwood previously competed on the University of Montana’s men’s team.

The University of Montana’s athletic director previously cited NCAA policy in explaining why Eastwood was competing on the women’s team. The NCAA allows male runners who identify as transgender women to compete in women’s athletics after suppressing testosterone levels for a full calendar year.

Eastwood, whose accomplishment was first flagged by The College Fix, isn’t alone in winning accolades in female athletics as a male athlete.

Biological male runner CeCe Telfer, who identifies as a transgender woman, won an NCAA DII national championship for Franklin Pierce University in May. Like Eastwood, Telfer competed on the university’s men’s team before later switching to the women’s team.

You should identify with whatever you want... identify as a giraffe. But when it comes to competition, you compete against that share you biological sex.

It's amazing that this has even become an issue.

People that toleerate or believe in this are retarded or mentally ill.
I am not in favour of the competitive advantage being granted but certain people should be mindful of the insults hurled at others.

shack is right. Those are not appropriate terms. Dumbfucks is a more appropriate descriptor for these people.

Can you please stop with this bogus sensitivity training nonsense? This is precisely how we got to the point where men are winning female athletic awards in the first place.

I honestly don't care if someone gets banned for calling people retarded. But calling someone retarded because they have a different opinion is sooo right wing.

So much for the pretext that all this hoorah is about protecting women athletes from unfair competition by biological males who would win everything in sight. So what is it about? Gender purity?

BigSleazy - Watch your fucking mouth.

Seriously. Using the R-word. Do you call people of colour the N-word too.

Bringing mental health into this as way to insult people is beyond offensive. Check yourself bud.

Post will be reported. Hopefully you get banned.

If this continues to happen women will never win any sporting events. We know athletes are willing to do anything to win medals. What stops men from all of sudden saying they identify as women and enter these events so they can win and become famous? This actually hurts women. Events were created so they can compete against one another and wouldn't have to compete with men. Maybe they should start a trans gender category.

p.s. Semenya is not trans. She has been legally a woman since birth and simply produces significantly more testosterone than typical in women. Her and a few other athletes are actually evidence that the male/female categories are not always crystal clear.

(he IIAF has no issue about men with abnormally high testosterone - they have also only said it is against the rules in middle distance running but somehow okay in power throwing events)

She is not trans, but she is classified as intersex, which means she’s basically biologically somewhere between male and female, so her case is a bit complicated. It’s not that she’s a woman who just naturally produces more testosterone, per se, it’s that she has a genetic abnormality that causes her to produce more testosterone. This would not be the case with biological females who are not intersex or have some other physiological abnormality. (I should note, I don’t mean abnormality in any negative way, my usage is strictly clinical).

Thus, while yes, there are exceptional cases such as Caster Semenya, there are still generally some very big differences in terms of physical ability between men and women, and that will be the case 99.9% of the time. Pointing to Caster Semenya as proof that the line between male and female athletic ability is not so clear cut is flawed because she is physiologically different from 99.9% of biological women.

Also, I should say, while there is a range of acceptable testosterone levels allowed for male athletes, there is a cap, so in the rare case of a male athlete whose natural testosterone production is above that cap (assuming such a thing were even possible), that athlete also likely wouldn’t be able to compete.
