Well, lookie here. Montreal just 3 pts behind Toronto with same number of games played and the powerhouse offensive Leafs have only scored 4 more goals than Montreal. There's your offense. And they still have Price. 6 of those Leafs goals came yesterday.
I'd say the Leafs are doing okay considering they're currently missing Matthews and Nylander. Montreal has also allowed 13 more goals.

Andersen 2.08 GA - .934 SV%
Price 2.99 GA - .899 SV%

In almost every game I've seen so far this year, it is obvious that the NHL is, indeed, the NHL ("No Hit League"). I've seen more body contact in figure skating. Great time to be a skilled player.
No hitting? Did you watch last night's Leafs/Ducks game?

Uh oh...bad news for Nylander...Kapanen scored two more goals last night! LOL
Dubas should lock him up as soon as possible. When Matthews comes back Kapanan should in all likelihood be able to produce at a higher pace than 61 points a year playing with either one of the top 3 centres. We don't want to see another Nylander scenario next year.

There's hitting but with no more clutching, grabbing, and hooking, it's hard to hit what you can't catch. If you're looking for Scott Stevens type head shot hitting good riddance on those. Even legal hits you have to answer to players like Lucic who are still policing. Protecting McD.

Kapanen also is a fine defensive player and penalty killer with speed to burn.

The only road game they've lost this year was vs Boston with Sparks in net. They are doing all this lately without Matthews and Nylander so you could say this is the low end of what they could do.

Sparks looked adequate in net. Got plenty lucky though with defensemen blocking shots for him when he was down and out. Ducks are also a low scoring team with very little offensive threats.

Rielly is looking like a true superstar now. Playing with tremendous confidence. Gets up ice quick. That shot he has is also quick with a zip to it. He could break 30 goals which is unheard of for a defenseman. Only Orr, Coffey, Dennis Potvin, Borque, and Doug Wilson did it. Even All Macinnis couldn't top 30. Close but no. 3 times 28.

That overtime had all 3 on the ice make great plays for the winner

For those who want the Leafs to have that stay at home defenseman, they don't exist anymore in today's NHL, much like the goon or enforcer. The NHL is now speed and skill. I'm enjoying the new era of hockey. The Kings and Ducks are built on size to forcheck teams to the ground but can't keep up with a speedy team like the Leafs. The Leafs burned all 3 california teams off the transition game.

For those that detest the bomber pass I see why the Leafs use it. It's their way to counter the trap. Less risk. Turnovers don't result in odd man rushes back the other way.

You're not wrong about speed and skill and the Leafs have a lot of them, but when speed and skill are about equal between teams, size and grit will matter, especially in the playoffs where the calibre of opposition will be a lot tougher than what the Ducks and Kings can offer. I don't think anyone here has asked for "stay at home" d man, except maybe more toughness and grit which they're still lacking. Regardless how well they do in the regular season, and even if they win the President's trophy, their season will be judged by how well they do in the playoffs.

It's encouraging though to see that the Leafs have been playing much better defence. I think they're one of the top 5 teams with fewest goals allowed per game. Andersen has been excellent since about mid October and Reilly and Gardiner have been very good defensively. Perhaps without JVR and Bozak is another reason for the improved defence.

Polak was a stay at home defenseman. Babcock liked using him. If they ban the bomber pass they would also need to ban the trap. However way the rules go coaches will find a way to counter everything. Ever see the Leafs get trapped now? They don't. They are called puck moving defenseman for a reason. If you watch Hainsey though he often just pounds the puck on the glass and out. That's old school and safe.

maybe tweak it but that won't happen cause no one really is complaining. no passes from behind the goal line past the center line or draw a line across the face off spots and use that. The trap killed the game so no way it's going back to that.

The way Marner is racking up the points it is looking more like he will get at least $10 million a year or more when it comes time to negotiate his next contract.

What's helped the Leafs this year is the emergence of Morgan Reilly. If the Leafs secure a playoff spot and a first round matchup with the Bruins looms, don't be surprised if they swing a deal for Drew Doughty. The Kings could be out of it by early March.

I don’t think Doughty will waive his no trade clause, he likes it in LA.

The Leafs are now 7-3 without "the franchise". The 4 most important players are Andersen, Rielly, Marner, Kadri and Tavares. Did I forget anyone?

Once Nylander signed and Matthew is back to the line up. Leafs will have too many forwards. Kadri could be a tradable commodity to clear cap space for the future. Besides Kadri, Leafs are rich in the middle so barring any injuries a couple of centremen need to sit or to be traded.

Why would the Maple Leafs want to trade Kadri?
He's on an extremely team friendly contract, with term (3 more seasons, cap hit of $4.5Mm).
Kadri also has a modified NTC in his contract.
For all those on this thread that value "grit", Nazem possesses more of it than most any other Toronto player.
The man has nifty mittens, and plays tough minutes vs. other teams top lines.
He's one of the last players I would consider trading.

Marner certainly is primed for a home town discount. Did you not see him when he was 4? Even then he wanted to play for Leafs. There is no way he would risk being traded

The whole point of managing cap is paying less than player is worth. Kadri definetely is good value. They are rich in center? Really? They are fricken playing Gautier. He's a stiff albeit a big one. And yes Leafs need more toughness and not give away the only one they have.

It is Marleau they have to dump at 6.25 mill. Without Marleau for next year easily can sign Nylander Matthews Marner. Perhaps Kap and Gardiner also. He was brought in for vet leadership but they have Tavaras for that now
